i just had a "old" GA-H77-DS3H, no big deal, no high end or whatsoever, and a very OLD 60gb SSD + my 4 hard drive, so... with my old 60gb and my 70€ old motherboard i outruned their Z97 and cruxial MX200 1TB ? wtf x).
I also saw people with very high end motherboard with win10 and all quick start activated options booting in less than 2sec and i think its lower than that because the screen taken more time to start than the PC...
Heh, with my rig I take 35seconds from the second I push the power on button on it. Though I am using Rainmeter hard and have a lot of startup apps by now.

Still with that being said, I hardly do a shutdown, unless I want to boot into my ESXi SSD and mess around with ESXi and my VMs on that.

Anyways back on topic, I think Windows 10 over Windows 8.1. Fresh install of course.

I've never liked the look of Windows 7 or Vista, hated the whole aero thing look, always ran it in the ugly classic mode. Feel like Windows 10 has a better design when it comes to that.

My vote is for 10. I upgraded every computer, laptop and tablet in my house from Vista/7/8.1 to 10. And aside from a stupid broken start menu/taskbar bug that appeared over the weekend (I fixed it yesterday using a DSIM command), I've had no problems with it.

Oh, and one day I'll learn how to silence Cortana whilst I'm on a Skype call.

Unlike windows, linux doesn't have any form of a major organisation behind it. It's all made by the community.
It's also completely open source, meaning that anyone can contribute to the project and develop their own forks. The majorly used distros are pretty solid, in my opinion. (I'm excluding ubuntu here, as I'm not too well informed on that particular distribution)

Honestly, I can't stand microsoft's new approach to things. I feel as if I'm being treated as a complete child when using windows 8/10.
When setting windows 10 up, I'm greeted with a big and bulky "Express Install" button. If you press it, you'll see only a colourful screen
showing one line of text: "We're setting things up for you...".. As if it would otherwise all be
far too complicated for me and my tiny brain to understand.

When you press the TINY, barely visible line of text in the very corner of the screen, you have the option to do a custom install. There, you'll see that
microsoft is trying to spy on you in every filthy way possible, which they try to hide with their annoyingly simplistic design, which often features only a few colours, little text and big buttons.

The entire UI is so incredibly childlike, with fancy colours, smooth animations, pretty noises and a bunch of other eyecandy. It's
distracting as hell, and tries hard to hide options and other settings that microsoft thinks
are much too complicated for its users.

Have you by any chance the new minecraft.net website? It just screams "microsoft" all over. (microsoft bought minecraft last year, in case you've been living under a rock)
They're going incredibly overboard with the whole "minimalist" design, and they're fucking forcing people to embrace it.
I've heard a sickening amount of reports of windows 7 users having the entire windows 10 upgrade being secretly downloaded in the background, only to boot on the windows 10 installation screen the next day.
Microsoft is pulling just about every dirty trick in the book, and it's all just barely legal, because you can temporarily (1 day) turn of automatic updates for windows 10 in some hidden option somewhere.

It's gotten so out of hand that it's completely insane. I don't know what Microsoft is doing, but I don't want to be a part of it.

tl;dr
windows 8/10 sucks because i'm being treated as an utter child.

Then don't use Windows. Stay on Linux. This isn't a Linux vs Windows thread. It's a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 thread.

Anyways, apart from when I was younger and used Fedora, I cannot be on a Linux only system. I need my Steam games, and I need my Creative Cloud apps to work.

Anyways, back on topic. I feel Windows 10 offers the better experience for Desktops, unlike the direction Windows 8/8.1 one went with that Metro UI (think that's what it was called?) - Wasn't a big fan of the new Start menu on Win10, but it has now grown on me just fine.

I'm sorry about that.
I started the post as a reply to @Joom, but then after my rant had gotten so far, I'd realised it didn't respond to his reply very directly anymore. So I just
scrapped the quote, and posted what I'd written.

Microsoft is in a position to where they need to cater to normal people (unlike us) in addition to power users (like us). Normal people won't be doing fresh Windows 10 installs, they'll either upgrade from an older version, or buy a computer that already has Windows 10 on it.

microsoft is trying to spy on you in every filthy way possible, which they try to hide with their annoyingly simplistic design, which often features only a few colours, little text and big buttons.
It's really not as bad as you think. What they do collect is anonymous usage features. This is why Libraries aren't prevalent anymore, because they found that most people didn't use them.

Have you by any chance the new minecraft.net website? It just screams "microsoft" all over. (microsoft bought minecraft last year, in case you've been living under a rock).
This is a trend that many companies are going towards, not just Microsoft. I was on Google's site recently looking at a Chromecast, and it was much worse than Minecraft's website.

I've heard a sickening amount of reports of windows 7 users having the entire windows 10 upgrade being secretly downloaded in the background, only to boot on the windows 10 installation screen the next day.

The upgrade is an opt-in feature. It will not upgrade without your consent. These people probably didn't know what they were doing and gave their OK when it asked.

Normal people have no excuse to not apply updates. The majority of them are security updates; it's a terrible idea to not install those, especially if you like being on the internet. The legit excuse I've heard is for big enterprises, who can't afford to restart their computers (usually servers) for months at a time.

Metro UI (think that's what it was called?)
That's what it was called originally, but then they couldn't use it anymore because of a trademark issue. Now it's "New UI".

Microsoft is in a position ... Now it's "New UI" (Sorry, didn't want to create a huge quote).

1. I'm fairly certain that these "normal people" are more than capable of operating a normal OS. Besides, I didn't exactly hear any complaints about
windows 7 being too difficult to operate, but moving on. I'm fine with microsoft trying to soften it all up for non-computer people, though I'm not fine with how they're doing it.
What they're doing now is viewing their ENTIRE userbase as non-computer people, instead of making it easier for those people and particular, while still keeping
the sense of control for people who know their way around a computer.

Also, you can only upgrade to windows 10 from windows 7 or 8. People who were already using windows 8 won't experience a huge change whatsoever.
But windows 7 users (Who stuck to windows 7 simply because of it not being like windows 8/10) would be infuriated. To them, it is like a fresh install.

2. Not as bad as I think or not, if I don't want to send anything to microsoft whatsoever, then let me.
If they had given me a clear option of doing so, then I'd consider. But not when they try to hide it like they do now.
Besides, if it were really as innocent as you make it out to be, why would they cover it up so badly?

3. Yes, I'm aware that google is also doing this, but the discussion at hand is microsoft. If they want to give the best user experience, make it good for
all users, not just the ones who aren't very good with tech.

4. Fine, this is possible. But windows 7 will still bug you with all things windows 10 related until you upgrade. Again, if microsoft wants to deliver
the best user experience, don't make people download software to block things your OS does to them.

5. Those people should update for security reasons, of course! But microsoft shouldn't take this as an advantage to sneak windows 10 into computers.

+1 for Win 10
I had a fair bit of problems with 8.1 (Namely I could not update to a higher version of 8.1 without getting bootloop) and I've had no problems with 10...
Yup, had the exact same problem on my gf's laptop. Upgrading to windows 10 from a clean install fixed all the problem we've had.

Your argument is irrelevant, though. FreeBSD is open source and community maintained as well. None of those things make Linux good. As far as your rant on minimalistic design goes, Microsoft isn't the only one doing that. Ever hear of ricing? It's what *nix users do to make their user environment as minimal as possible, which typically includes using a borderless WM and sticking to CLI applications as much as possible. There's also Android's Material design, which is following the flat color template as well. The days of gradients and gloss are gone.
