It does use the SDIO standard though. The memory cards are likely modified SD cards with extra security.

Why wouldn't an SD Micro card fit (theoretically) inside the Vita memory card? It seems like it would fit; though there's the issue of the OTHER hardware to make it compatible (it's not as trivial as an SD Micro to SD adapter).

I get all of the justifications, but I just hate the proprietary memory card. Especially as someone who purchases most games digitally (I only own one physical game; and that's Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, and it came with X-2 digitally!). I'm not so sure the piracy things makes a lot of sense. I mean, if that were true; then why would Sony have no problems with me swapping out my PS4's Hard Drive? A similar proprietary file system suffices for the PS4; so why not for the Vita as well? Give the pricing, lack of 3rd party developers making alternative memory cards, etc., I just have a hard time believing the memory cards don't have a big "tertiary income" component here.

Something strapped to the back probably wouldn't work. But attached to the bottom or top of the unit would make sense wouldn't it?

I've got a Wii U that has an external hard drive AND an SD card attached to it. A PS4 with an aftermarket 2TB drive. A PC which, of course, has whatever storage I'd like with it. The Xbox One supports games on an external drive. Nintendos handheld offerings offer the ability for SD/SD Micro storage, etc. Vita really is in an unfortunate class-by-itself with a proprietary memory card. And, if it were 10 to even 30% more than an SD offering, I wouldn't be too upset. But the sheer insanity of their pricing does bother me. Over $100 for a 64GB card? I just bought a 64GB MicroSD card for my DriftHD Camera for $19, and it's a Samsung brand Class 10! What exactly makes the Vita memory card so great that it deserves being 426% more expensive than name-brand competing flash storage using an industry standard? (Answer: It's proprietary, so it can be gouged.)

Vita card is slightly longer, much thicker, and wider than micro sd. Easily could have a photofast style adapter made.

The problem is in encryption, i know.

I have a brand new 3G vita I've used once sitting here. Keeping it at 3.0.1 for now though. So my 8GB card sits unused.
