Hardware Wiimote IR, how strong and far apart do they have to be?

As Wiimote just works by sensing (2 IR leds?) or anything similar, how strong do they have to be?

And if i want it to work on close distance (like a PC monitor kind of distance) how far would they need to be apart?

the wii IR should reach about 3 meters.
