Hate to start a new thread, but there is not really one with first impressions or reviews. So I figure I would post something.

I wanna start out by saying that I am definately not some one in shape. I am not fat, but I also haven't worked out in 4 years. I am 5'10" and weigh 175. The reason I wanted to pick this up is because it looked like a fun way to at least get the heart going. I have tried to work out in the basement and the gym, but if I do it myself, it never lasts. So I figure, maybe a videogame workout would be good to keep my interest.

OK, so I played it for about 1 hour last night, for a total of 32 minutes of exercise time. I went through all of the available routines, but have not tried the ones I opened. Here are my thoughts:

- While doing Yoga, there is a blue circle that gets bigger and smaller. The game tells you to inhale when it gets smaller, and exhale when it gets bigger. I always have a hard time focusing on my breathing when I work out, so this really helps.

- The Yoga poses actually do make you feel stretched out. In addition, they are not easy to do right off the bat. Some maybe easier then others, but you definately feel it.

- The trainer corrects you if you are doing something wrong. For instance, in doing lunges, I was bending my front leg a bit to much. The scale saw the over compensation, and the instructor told me there is to much bend on the front leg. That is really impressive.

- In the routines, there is usually an area in which you need to keep your marker in. The board will judge your balance and show it to you with a point on the screen. On the screen there will be another circle or something else of the sort where you must keep your assigned balance point in. This definately helps with the exercises, and also helps with muscle toneness in the long run.

- The Muscle building exercises definately are great. They won't build you much muscle, but they will definately tone you as your going to be using different muscles and isolating them.

- The aerobic exercises seem ok. I am not sure exactly how much weight I am burning by running in place. But I did work up a sweat during the 32 minutes of exercise. I think the Hula Hoop exercise had me sweating more then the running in place though.

- The Balance Exercising are more of a game. I can't see getting much benifit from playing these. Most of the games feel ackward, but it could be because I am not shifting my weight properly. This was a first go around, so I want to see what it will be like after a couple of tries.

All in all, I would say that this thing is pretty damn good. It did get me to get a nice sweat going. There are 2 things that I was expecting that I did not get though:

1- A work out regime.

It seems that they just give you the exercises, but they don't have an actual routine you should follow. I was hoping to see something where you would do 15 exercises 1 day and a different 15 the next. This is definately disappointing.

Also, it would be nice if the system automatically raised and lowered the difficulty, reps and so on for each exercise. From my initial play time, this seems like something you need to keep track of and manually change. I could be wrong, maybe the system will change this as the days go on. But it would suck if in a month, I need to switch the push ups to 50 or something like that. The system should do this for you.

I guess I was hoping it would be like an actual trainer. A trainer sets up the exercise routine and keeps making it harder for you. I don't want to manually keep track of things and change them up.

2- While I definately built up a sweat, I am not sore today. For not having done any exercises in 4 years, I should at least feel a little sore. Maybe the acid hasn't built up yet, and I will feel something tomorrow, but I am surprised there is minimal soreness. I only feel it in remote muscle areas like my shin. I hope I do get some pain, that is the way to judge it is working. I do want to make sure I do get a work out here.

If anything, I would say this thing is fun and will help me with my breathing while working out in the future. This maybe a good begining for me to do this for a month, then to move on to real exercising with weights and a treadmill. I hope it does get more intense through further use or that there are other games that come out for the balance board. I read a boxing game will utilize it, so it should be well worth the investment in the long run.

I bought it for the wife (Nintendo's target audience probably lol) and she's over the moon with it. She's tried all sorts of exercising over the years, and it will be interesting to see if WiiFit is something that she will stick with due to it's fun and novelty factors.

Of course I have tried it myself, and as an exercise-shy fop I gotta say its a good laugh. Whether it will actually get me any fitter is debatable, since there are only so many hours in the day and I have to fit some GTA4 and RockBand in there somewhere, but I can see myself doing a little every day or two.

Well, I would recommend it. I think the balance board will be great once other companies start jumping on it.

Since your 16, I don't know how much you will get out of it if you are active. You probably will find the Yoga challenging, but not sure about the rest of the stuff. But you could always set the push ups to a higher level (reps) and so on, which may give you a greater challange.

It is good to develope proper form and breathing for exercising. A lot of people do exercises wrong so it doesn't help them.

So for you at 16, I am not sure what to say. You may find it a novelty if you work out and are active. If your lazy and looking for a good place to start, then go with this.

If you are looking for a game, I don't think the Balance games will keep your interest for too long. It maybe fun if you can get your friends into it though. So I am not sure if I answered you, I figured I would let you choose by what I wrote.

Is it worth the high price tag?

Depends, what are you looking to get out of it? Fun Game, Exercise?

- Fun Game: Like Wii Sports, novely only lasts so long.
- Exercise: Yes, but it seems this will tone muscle, not build it.

The price tag isn't that high if you use it regularly, as you are supposed to ...

Also, the balance board is, and will be, usable with more titles than just this one ...

We Ski aka Family Ski already makes use of it, and over 10 titles are due before Christmas that will either support it, or require it ...

There's a pole dancing game (No, I am serious), a snowboarding title, some weird balancing puzzle game, and a sort of 'eyetoy without the eyetoy' thing, that has a ton of mini-games ... that's what I remember off the top of my head ... I'll dig out links and such later ...

If you're interested in losing weight/keeping a nice figure this game is perfect for you.

If however you're in it for the fun/gaming experience, you'll grow tired quite fast.

I'd only recommend this for people who intend to get/stay fit.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.

I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150

Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
