btw, i played the game yesterday. Good game! With some experiments its not to hard to browse through the japanese menus.

You don't need to know Japanese for a lot of Japanese games. Usually it's only if there is a storyline that forces you to go to other people.
Otherwise you use common sense.

It initially asked me to perfom a system update (I have a U.S. Wii), so I had to brick block it. I can only assume it wanted to install Japanese fonts. Can anyone confirm this to be the case?

Japanese fonts? Highly unlikely, Japanese firmware maybe. All the fonts should be stored in the disc itself.
BTW, is it good?

I thought it was the japanese font because all the character text is garbage symbols, not Japanese.
