Hardware Wii updates

I'm getting the wiikey v2 and my current wii menu version is 3.1e

Are most games and homebrew compatible with this version?
If not, is there a way to update to 3.3e without by avoiding updating to 3.4e?

Why would you want to be on 3.3e ?
If anything the best firmware is 3.2e

To do that you can use the IOS downgrader (badly named) to upgrade (you pick the version)
The files are in the second link in my signature , EmperorOfCanada has them , or Big Moe has them and a few others as well.

No you need a wireless connection and an SD card for it

You can actually turn your usb stick into a wireless access point. That should definitely work with all homebrew as it would behave just like a regular router. afterdawn.com Guide
