There has been some, well, alot of speculation regarding how many Wii U controllers (or Wiipads, depending on who you ask) players will be able to use with the recently announced Nintendo system that comes out some time in 2012. Many noticed that in all of the pictures and video that Nintendo trotted out to publicize its new system, there never seemed to be more than one touchscreen sporting controller being used at any one time.

Nintendo, of course, neglected to address this during its E3 press conference which it held last Tuesday. Well now, in an interview with Nintendo’s main man Shigeru Miyamoto, it has been revealed that the Wii U will, in fact, only support one Wii U controller per system.

“Our basic premise is that you can use one with a system,” said Miyamoto. “If we got to an idea of having multiple, it might be just more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that. That being said, we are doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friend’s house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible.”

So there’s the answer to that question. Since the announcement of the Nintendo Wii U, Joystiq has reported that Nintendo’s stock has dropped 10%, reaching levels the company has not seen since before the Wii was announced.

What’s your take on the Wii U? Does Nintendo have another hardware hit on its hands?

well there you go you all don't have to worry about the cost of this thing to buy more because

1. The reason the stocks are low is the same reason they were low with the announcement of the Wii. Nothing to be concerned about.

2. I'm not really surprised it only supports one Wii U controller. Any more would surely cause latency issues.

The other wiimotes are there for a purpose.

Plus I suppose the Wii U is more fit for ONLINE multiplayer play rather than two controller multiplayer

So, Do the Wiimotes connect to the WiiU controller, rather than the console?

WHAT!? This makes no sense whatsoever! Give us at least TWO WiiU controllers! =(

This will mean we will still have to use Wiimotes for Multiplayer?

That is actually good. So nobody needs to buy 4 of those (probably not cheap) touch screen controllers.

Ubisoft showed off local multiplayer of Killer Freaks - one was using the tablet for his strategic job in the game, the other was using the classic controller for his shooting. It's great to have players take on different roles on the same game. And if both players do the same - like split screen racing, shooter, puzzling:

Nintendo said the old controllers (wiimote, nunchuk) are still going to be used. I guess that is for multiplayer games mainly.

I don't really find it shocking though...

If it's good enough for online multiplayer, then I'm fine with it

Well, actually it kinda makes sense. Since this is also a console marketed to Core gamers... most Core gamers play their games alone, and do not love local multiplayer, so none of the AAA titles will probably have an hit from this.

And party games can just be kept playing as they've always been played.

Remember the reversi? The controller can also act as a party game device with multiplayer thanks to the touch screen

If 3rd party support is great, then Playstation & Xbox will have a really hard time. Because Nintendos first party support is already tooo good and very very famous. Even the our grand dads know who Mario is

Well one controller per console is a good thing, now atleast people won't whine about having to spend alot, just keep your wiimotes intact and you are ready for multiplayer as soon as you get WiiU, not bad.

And to add on to your post, the Wii U will come with one tab controller.

I can sort of understand where they are coming from, could you imagine the kind of horse power needed to stream possibly 4 different visuals to 4 different WiiPads.

Also, consider this, for the last 6 years weve criticized Nintendos focus on local rather then online multiplayer, this could just be there way of showing tahst no longer the case.

But if they release a Wii U classic controller, kind of like this

Bolded the part that matters.
