Something to consider if that enabling online cheating will result in Nintendo responding/patching much quicker, as it has an impact on all other players...

I'm pretty sure Nintendo will patch it pretty quickly either way, it's about what we personally want to do about the issue.

We probably won't ever know, but if I were Nintendo, I would care less about some customers modding, isolated locally/offline, rather than potentially negatively impacting a larger group of customers. The number of affected customers is not the same between the two scenarios:
A) Only those who mod are affected (if online cheating is prevented)
B) All online players could be affected (if online cheating is allowed).

I think they'll release game updates/system updates, essentially forcing a "lockout" for online-you either update and play their way, or you're forced to stay offline with the hacks. Of course, this assumes people haven't set up their own servers or something.

It's a nice thought, but what I've seen in the Wii scene shows me that Nintendo seems to dislike all console hacking in general, regardless of what it's being used for. Team Twiizers/fail0verflow tried to work towards preventing piracy to earn Nintendo's goodwill, and it didn't matter: Nintendo patched everything regardless.

Oh, I'm not saying that they won't patch it; I agree with you there. I just think that they will care more and put more effort into killing is as quickly as possible if there's online cheating involved, just from a purely business impact standpoint.

But there's not much point in this philosophical discussion other than to try to help you guys think about the impact. From a purely moral standpoint, it doesn't make sense to allow online online cheating because it impacts those that may not even want to participate with modding. It should be opt-in only.

Online cheating will no doubt push Nintendo to act much faster... Just look at microsoft with the jtags... The more time before nintendo patches... Means more time for the scene to mature and find more holes

So with this it would be possible to make a homebrew channel like on the Wii?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Haven't we answered this question enough times!?!

EDIT: Alright, I'll answer it ONCE MORE: Nothing permanent can be installed until the bootloader has been defeated. Not even fail0verflow managed that... At the moment, the "HomebrU" channel exists only in peoples imaginations. :D
