Hi guys,
trying to set up my wiiu to store and play games with friends.

I have few questions about external HD, hope you can help:

1) Is that true that using USB flash drives is not recommended?

2) I have been told that a Y cable can be used on USB 2.0 hard drives only, is that true?

3) Can you suggest me any cheap, external powered hard drive on Amazon Eu?

4) I have seen a SSD hard drive connected to wiiu without Y cable or power cord, how is that possible?

Thank you in advance for all the help you can provide!

Hello.:)

I depends on the Enclosure/Controller and maybe the SSD too:

And please do not place it on the TOP of the Wii U,the WiFi is maybe no longer working.:D

2) I have been told that a Y cable can be used on USB 2.0 hard drives only, is that true?

It is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to use this Y Cable on all HDDs for the Wii U.:)

1) Is that true that using USB flash drives is not recommended?

You can try it for yourself and see the Result please.:)
Same as for the Wii - better use a HDD (with Power Supply).

Thank you.:)

Answering in order:

1) A lot of people don't recommend USB thumb drives because they're not made to be writtin' data all the time, as the Wii and the Wii U do.
2) It's recommended for all kind of HDDs (2.0, 3.0, of all kind of storage capacity), unless you have an HDD with external power. For example, I myself have a 3.0 enclosure with 3.0 Y cables.
3) As far as I know, this one is perfect, but isn't pretty common to find on Amazon. But the Western Digital Book Hard family of drives are perfect for the Wii U.
4) It depends on the enclosure or the external SSD you're using. SDDs need less power because they're not the spinnin' plate kind of drive, instead they use flash memory to store the data.
