I've had a Wii U for about two years, and around that time I bought a 1TB external hard drive with a power supply, based on what I read about the console and the use of external drives. The thing is, the drive works fine for a while, but there comes a point when I try to install new programs using WUP Installer, or even with programs that are already installed, and I get error 160-0105 saying there's an error with the USB storage and to turn off the console. I've known for a while that when I get that error, the program is corrupted because I can't even delete it from the console's data manager. In that case, I have to find the title ID associated with that game and move it via FTP from /storage_usb/usr/title/titleid to, say, /storage_usb/usr/noerase/titleid. In these cases where the encrypted WFS USB file system is corrupted, is there any way to run a scan and repair on the USB file system to remove those defective titles without having to forcibly format the USB drive? And please excuse my poor English, but I'm using a translator to write this.

I have Aroma and ISFSHax installed on the console.

you can attach the drive to PC and diagnose using windows/linux disk utilties, without formatting/touching the content.
Check if SMART has any abnormal stats for start.
