Weren't we just talking about Wii Play two weeks ago? And even then we never expected this surprise announcement. Nintendo of America revealed in a press release this morning that 2006's million-selling mini-game collection will be getting a new sequel here in 2011.

Wii Play: Motion will be its name, and just as its predecessor packed an extra Wii Remote controller in the same box, so too will this new release be a bundle. This time, though, the packed-in bonus controller will be a Wii Remote Plus, the newer version of Nintendo's signature remote that has the functionality of a MotionPlus adapter built right in to the same small plastic housing.

It'll also be a black one. Just so you know.

The official boxart for the game.

Wii Play: Motion, talking about the game now, will be a mini-game collection in the same style as Wii Play before it. It will feature a dozen different designs each created to show off the enhanced motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote Plus controller, and so will only be playable with it (or with an older Wii Remote you've attached a separate MotionPlus adapter to.)

The games will include a take on Whack-a-Mole, a new Frisbee-throwing challenge that builds off the disc-tossing games in Wii Sports Resort and a mini-game in which you'll be tasked to catch gusts of wind with a twisting umbrella.

The package will go on sale in America on Monday, June 13, 2011.

That's just days after the conclusion of this year's E3 Expo in Los Angeles, so you can be assured that Wii Play: Motion will be a focus of the company's Wii promotion in its booth at the show. We'll go hands-on with it there, report back our thoughts and then less than a week afterward you'll be able to own it for yourself.

Nintendo of Europe has announced that the game will see release in that region as well, though no specific date is available there yet. Europeans will be getting a red Wii Remote Plus instead of black, though. So that's different.

So what do you think? Are you as surprised as we are? Did Wii Play need a sequel? Or, really, the real question. Will you buy it? Let us know your reaction with the Comments box below and we'll be back to read them in a little while. Right now we've got to go sort through our old Wii Remotes to decide which one's getting retired in favor of the fresh one we'll be getting in two months.

This should be a good enough reason to get a wii-motion plus wiimote.
Mostly in anticipation of playing Zelda Skyward sword actually.

Cool. It probably won't sell as well as the first (I would image people ONLY buying this for Skyward Sword).

People aren't into the Wii like they used to be.
why did i buy wii sports resort for that wiimotion plus(for skyward of course) WHY?

Wii Play was like one of the worst Nintendo games made. Period. It was shovelware in every sense of the word. The only reason it sold well is because of the extra Wiimote. You'd buy it, play the game for all of 10 minutes, then never play it again because it sucked.

+1
that's the only good thing about it
nintendo said it was for noobs who can't use the wii remote well and that was to ''teach them how''
i was like you're kidding me right?

it was a decent co-op game, especially the tanks and pool games

Like or not, Nintendo is a business and of course after realising the massive success commercially of Wii Play. I'm not surprised, besides everyones gonna need a MotioPlus to play Skyward Sword so heres the ebst way to do it

this will sell like hot cakes cos if the remote i remember buying the original than selling back the game without the mote it sold $5 less for what i paid and i pretty much got a remote for $5!!

Agreed. I actually did a review on Club Nintendo of it, and just tore it apart.

What do you expect out of 9 games for the value of $5? That's the cost of wii play minus the wii remote cost.

Actually for $5, Wii Play wasn't so bad, it served its purpose of introducing the players to the wii remote.

the best sports game collection that is mii-based for me is wii sports resort and esp for the table tennis. Infact i didnt truly like the over flexible controls for wii sports tennis or wii sports as a whole. Especially since good games like golf for me gave me some putting problems (i wonder if others experienced it or maybe i suck at it although i did get an award for beating the table tennis girl champion)
