Hacking Wii memory question

If the Internet would be used for this (which I'm certain that it will), it wouldn't be nice IMO. The advantage of VC is that you don't need anything else to play the games. Just download it and voila, you can play it. No internet connection or cartridges needed. If they will switch to "streaming solution", a lot of problems will surely arise.

The only situation I only see at the moment is this:

People will not be able to play VC titles if they get D/C'ed temporarily or if their connection is cut off. That happened to me 2-3 times within 4 months.

I'll just go with additional storage solution.

I agree, going on Nintendo's past record, they dont like to rock the boat if they can - its far more likely that vc will just run off the sd card.

If they do that however, that will require a firmware update, which no doubt will knock out TH again.

NAND has limited writes and will suffer from read degradation over time. It's a proven fact, so the only ridiculous argument is you proving it isn't.
I say its ridiculous because even if you ignore wear leveling on nand flash memory you still get 100'000 rewrites, so functioning correctly the memory will last far longer than the wii will. It becomes a moot point based on the lifespan of the console.

If you read anything about the Starlet Core in the wii, it constantly reads and writes to the NAND. so with wear leveling accounted for i would estimate under normal use we will start to see wii's with NAND's corrupting data within the next year or two

Geez, finally someone to back me up here...

More problems than people complaining that they don't have enough space on the NAND?

The fact of the matter is, the Wii isn't a Dreamcast -- it doesn't come with a modem installed. Broadband is reliable and I doubt anyone is waiting more than a couple minutes for their Nintendo 64 games to download from the Shop Channel. Even if they were to only stream NES, SNES, T16, and Genesis games, that would relieve a lot of space on the NAND.

Opening up the SD card for VC titles will just lead to more exploitation than Nintendo is willing to allow. Imagine being able to load injected titles without having the Twilight hack installed.

Not a problem there, i see people saying how good NAND in consoles is and i get nausious,

one other thing that people dont realise is that its 100k per block, wear leveled, but once ~10% reports bad blocks wear leveling algos can get confused.

also if system menu is on a block that goes bad... wii locks up.

seen it happen on 1 wii already (the update wear leveling verification isnt/wasnt as good as it should have been)

This i dont 100% agree with, yes it could be used to exploit, But if in a future update they verified the signatures on the TMD for EVERY channel before it was launched this would not be as easily exploited. remember sys-menu 3.3 implemented patches on ios30 and ios 31, so the trucha bug would be fixed.

AND to launch of SD card....... well if they implemented that it would require an update...... so there are the fixes rolled out at the same time

You saw how quickly 3.3 was worked around.

Once Nintendo opens up SD access, it won't be long before it's hacked to run backups.

The 3.3 work around is Gecko OS for Trucha, and thats only a work around as the other IOS's (not including 37 which is still unused) dont have the trucha fix, and i believe gecko runs on 21 or 36. as for the TH fix that was due to the same mistake that makes trucha work on 3.2 and earlier.

IMO all that would be required is to check the authenticity of the TMD before loading a channel. that would also kill the Homebrew channel remember.

now im not saying that it couldnt be curcimvented thru a gamesave exploit and launch a program that launches channels, but that would be many extra steps and by that time for the hacked shit you might as well run emulators. altho some people might be that determined, the OP sounds like he would be as well as those who pirate wiiware (note: i dont own a wii anymore i got sick of all the shitty games being released and personally i dont think wiiware is even worth pirating)
