Hi everyone,

I recently released LocalSend3DS, an unofficial LocalSend-compatible client for the Nintendo 3DS family.

It allows you to send files between a 3DS and official LocalSend clients on the same local network, with bidirectional device discovery and one-file transfers.

I've tested it on a real New Nintendo 2DS XL with:

- macOS ↔ 3DS
- Linux ↔ 3DS
- Android ↔ 3DS

Both .3dsx and native .cia builds are available.

LocalSend3DS is also now available directly through Universal-Updater.

Current limitations include one file per transfer, no folders/text/clipboard transfers, no PIN-protected recipients, and incoming transfers currently use HTTP.

I'd especially appreciate testing on other models in the 3DS family, so let me know how it works for you.

Thanks!

I'm a fan of this App on Windows/Linux/Android, I use it almost every day to transfer my school essays and PDF files between my devices.

On the 3DS console though, I, personally, don't see it would have much use from me, but its very nice to see it ported.

Hope to see it ported on more consoles, like the PS Vita/Switch 1/Wii/Wii U, it might be feasible.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot! I totally get that, the 3DS is definitely a pretty niche use case for LocalSend 😄

I mostly wanted to see if I could get it working properly on the system, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Ports to other consoles could be really interesting too. If I had a Vita or Wii U, I’d honestly love to try porting it to those as well.

Really appreciate the kind words!

Is there a benefit to this over using FTP?
There definitely is, mainly in convenience.

With FTP you usually have to start an FTP server on the 3DS, find its IP/port, then connect to it using a separate FTP client.

With LocalSend3DS, devices discover each other automatically. If you already use LocalSend on your phone or computer, the 3DS simply shows up alongside your other devices and you can send a file to it directly.

FTP is still better if you want to browse/manage the whole SD card or transfer lots of files, but for quickly sending a file between devices, I find LocalSend much more convenient.
