It's because in most parts of the world, we have no iTunes music store. We don't have Netflix. We don't have Pandora. We don't have Zune.

As a 13 year old, the only way I can legally get access to any movie/song is by finding a method of transportation to get to the nearest mall to pay a load of cash because stores here can be expensive, on an album in which I only like a song or two. People seldom look beyond the States and Canada! Many regions in Europe, Asia, and Africa are not covered by digital stores or rising cloud-based services. Implement all that new modern stuff in other parts of the world. Take advantage of the technology that we do not actually lack. I want to purchase songs because I think the artists deserve it, and I don't want my music library to be all messy with no album art or proper titles.

Can I get agreement on this?

We pirate 'cause pirate copies are free - 99% of cases.
We pirate 'cause some content is restricted only to some regions of the worlds and we believe importing it to be too much of a hassle - 1% of cases.

Who agrees?

As a 13 year old, the only way I can legally get access to any movie/song is by finding a method of transportation (really hard) to get to the nearest mall to pay a shit ton of cash because stores here suck, on an album in which I only like a song or two. Please people, there's more to the world than the States and Canada! Look at Europe, Asia, the Middle East! Implement all that new modern stuff in other parts of the world! Take advantage of the technology which, by the way, we do not lack. So who agrees?

Pirating is one thing - if you can't afford given media, it's understandable and a minor offence. When you start lying to yourself about your motivation, the discussion turns into some quasi-moralistic bullshit that's completely baseless.

We live in the age of the Internet - there are hectotonnes of stores that deal with online shipping, unless you live in freaking Antarctica then I'm not buying your argument. Moreover, if you don't have access to Digital Distribution, how about, I don't know, going outside once in a while and, I don't know, buying a physical copy? Or ordering it online? You clearly are online now, what's stopping to?

That said, digital distribution is quite wide-spread as it is and it's only spreading, so whatever countries *don't* have the services you require will eventually have them anyways.

The rest of the world. You know, outside the States.
And no, I do not live in Ireland.

Problem solved - http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

I pirate because my hunger for media is far greater than my income.

You got me there, but.. it's still wrong. No it's not quite theft, but it still leads to a smaller income for the artists and people who worked on the song/movie.

I think he just doesn't have the money/don't have a proper way to pay online, since he is just 13,

But sorry, gotta agree with Foxi with this one, Why lie to yourself?

Oh c'mon - there's PayPal, there's parents, grandparents - whatever. There are "ways" to pay online. I believe that "can't afford" is more probable then "can't pay", moreover, there are services that allow the buyer to pay upon recieving the item rather then beforehand - I'd know, I use them all the time when I order expensive things that I want to check for faults before paying. Saves me the hassle of sending the item back if it's faulty.

Good point,
But you can't expect someone to be a master of online payments and management at the age of 13 though. I doubt he is the type to actually save money for months to get something he wants himself.

EDIT: I still remember the day where I stopped eating lunch for a month to buy pokemon Yellow :P

I pirate because I'm a kopimist and my religion holds the file sharing is very sacred, do not insult my religion, you do not have that right, my religion is sacred you fucking liberals!

Just kidding, I pirate because I like to look for a lot of new music and movies, so much so that I'd probably bankrupt my family if I actually bought shit. I do buy some (read: very very very little) stuff, like the latest Foo Fighters and Dream Theater albums. I would buy some of the stuff I pirate some day, some of them probably not (i.e. terrible music).

I do have some philosophical views that music and art, etc. should be distributed freely, and if I ever become a recording artist I would probably be the one sharing my files on file sharing sites (and I would share them on mediafire, not some shit host, and in FLAC or at least 320kbps MP3), but I'm not going to justify my piracy with some idealistic bullshit.

That's a matter of his personal issues with money management, not a matter of whether or not piracy is right or wrong though. ;)

Honestly, I pirate because I don't have the money to toss on substandard entertainment at this point in my life (raising children, mortgage, etc.). I happily *invest* in games that I have faith or brand-loyalty in because I know I am getting my moneys worth. I have also purchased titles I pirate if they meet my levels of expectation.

Gone are the days of my happily pooping out my paycheck on games/movies that simply don't deserve the pricetag they have been given.

That is extremely shabby logic. Just because the original isn't missing after the act doesn't mean it's not theft.

Multiplication of source material without the rights to do so and doing so againts the license the file is distributed with is theft of Intellectual Property, and you can sugarcoat it all you want but at the end of the day you're still wrong. How would you feel if you invested tons of money into a venture and then your profits would be thwarted by 13-year old boys who copy your content rather then purchase it? OBVIOUSLY you would be QUITE UPSET.

I can totally live with piracy , i work hard for a living and do quite well finacially , however if i can further enhance my cashflow and keep my kids stocked up with media then i will , if the free cash this saves me allows us to do other things , i will do it . I have been doing for 20 years and i havent ever seen any signs of : nintendo collapsing , microsoft going under , the movie industry falling apart , music moguls not sitting in 10 bedroom mansions etc etc etc , this may make me sound self centred , so be it , donate cash to charity regular we do , may not be much but my cash goes then to worthwhile causes . F&$k the authorities if they truly wanted to end it they could. tbh if i dont burn of any items or print of the covers and leave it sat on my HDD it feels a lot less pirated somehow , and i guess i didnt pirate the item/s in the first place i received them from someone else who did.. lmao ... :) grab what you can people... digitally of course :)

You can buy it at any length @homedepot wire cutting area cheaper than buying preformed cable, but you have to put on your own ends/ connectors.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
I still like DTV but the wire wasn't long enough to reach the window still pick up 40 channels
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea me too, esp for local news, sports, or channel surfing. I get like 60 channels but there's like 15 shopping networks, and bunch other bs, religion, Hispanic, etc. I went thru and blocked most those on tv channel settings.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
There is 1 Hispanic channel I kept, sometimes they have soap operas on it, w scandalous clothed hotties, I just beat mute it.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Ah yes the Juan channel order 15 pairs of feet
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
I got this antenna but the damn thing has usb power right next to the coax plug and you can't actually extend it without usb extension the Pic makes the cable look longer than it actually is https://a.co/d/501IQf2
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Use a old phone/ USB charger block thing, plug into wall instead of tv usb. Use cheap extension cord if need.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
You still need usb extension because coax end cord is the same length
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Oh I thought you were gonna extend the coxial cable with another 10 footer
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
I am but you need both to make it work
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    I meant like this.
    screenshot_20250124-032243-png.482191
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
You don't have to use the tv usb, any USB 5v will power it. USB extention cables are not cheap either, so this would be cheaper way.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
The coax to the tv is at the same port as the power
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
All soldered into the pcb so you can't just unscrew it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Use a cable coupler to extend it from there.
    200-053_03.jpg
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Yeah but you have to have extension to usb also it's the same length basically
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
They're both on the same end
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Yes that's the goal but it still may not fit the wall plug from the window
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    They're cheap anyway a 10ft usb cable is $5
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Your tv may also even have an option to turn off USB power when tv off, will save a little money on power.
  • AdenTheThird @ AdenTheThird:
Maybe it's just because it's two in the morning, but watching a conversation about TV power source logistics using google images and a paint app is fucking hilarious
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea I'm on my tablet and using a lame paint app, it sucks.
