Gaming Why do you pirate?

With the creation of the Wii Pirate disc loader thread, I have started to realize that people want games, but will not pay for them. I do not understand this.
Since tempers do not like to read long posts, I will keep this brief.

-Why do you pirate?
-Why do you call the game "Backups" when they are clearly pirated and not of your own creation?
-If you want to try a game, why don't you borrow it/rent it/watch videos on youtube instead of pirating it?
-How do you justify ripping the game companies off?

I do not think piracy is all bad. I think that intellectual property theft is not stealing. Not making money (Piracy)is not the same as losing money(theft). I just do not understand why you guys try to justify it. I do not have a modchip installed. I have a wiikey sitting on my dresser, but I never got around to installing it.

You guys say thay you buy games to make sure that it is good. This is reasonable. What is not reasonable is that you never buy the game. I have never met a pirate that used the chip to try games.

Why do you fool yourselves? Why do you hide behind a thin vale of legitamacy? If you would just admit that you have a modchip because you fell elite when you use it or you are too cheap to buy games or that you feel you are above paying for games, I would be less annoyed. I will list some popular excuses and holes in them:

I can't afford games.
If you can't afford games, how did you pay for the system/modchip/dvds/bandwidth required to be a pirate?
The games all suck.
So why do you keep downloading them? Sell you wii and move on.
Nintendo charges too much.
They have to make up for pirates and they have to pay the bills. Games cost millions to make and advertise. Support them by paying them.
If I bought the game, I would not get my moneys worth out of it.
Then buy a PS2 and get some cheap games.

I will admit that I used to pirate DS games. Why? I felt soooooooo cool when I bought it and saw no reason to pay for the games. Now I see games as entertainment that will stop being as high quality if I do not buy games.

And a closing note:
Games are much less fun when you pirate them. You lose intrest quickly. If you buy it, you are stuck with it and forced to play until the game becomes fun. I but many more of you would have liked SMG if you had purchased it.

I own 8 wii games. I paid 50 USD for 6 of those 40USD for 1 and wii sports was included. I have 2 pirated wiiware wads. I have never purchased anything from the WSC.

If I were the type that pirated material, here's what I'd say....

I pirate because I don't want to pay for games.

I call them backups because everyone else calls them backups. They should actually be called " Backups

".

It's easier to pirate than to borrow/rent it, and videos don't cut it. (It's like standing over someone's shoulder, waiting for a chance to play.)

I don't justify it. I don't need to justify it because (a) I know it's a crime, and (b) I'm okay with breaking the law. I'm okay with ripping off the game companies, too, because I'm not directly affected by my non-purchase. (I'm not going to lose my job, for example.) Sure, a game studio may dry up due to lackluster sales, but there's always one more that steps up to take its place.

In regards to your point about "piracy isn't fun", you do have a point. With a virtual smorgasbord of games, you lose interest quickly. You don't have any desire to complete a game 100%.

Of course, this is all a work of fiction, because I don't pirate games. (I also wouldn't admit to any crime on a public forum where my IP address is logged.

Well if ways were not out to pirate I would have not gotten the system in the first place. That includes the DS and the Wii so no one is out of any money and Nintendo makes a few bucks. Same with movies and anything else I may happen to pirate. If it was not available free to me I would have no interest in it so no one is truly out of any money (At least when it comes to me).

Wii games are too expensive over here.. don't have enough money to buy them.. still, I have 4 legally purchased games (not counting WiiSports)..

I buy Wiiware games though, those are cheap..

90% of the things I pirate I wouldn't even buy anyway, so it is not like that much money is being lost on me. Maybe four games at best, but really I'm just pissing in the ocean. Yes, it is gross but in the end no one cares if I do it. Now 100,000 people is another story, but that is Somebody Elses Problem. (S.E.P. for any Hitchhiker fans).

Not necessarily Cockroachman, to game companies they may see rentals as and eventual purchase of that title especially if its an rpg or long game.

So rentals can still benefit some companies if the player is satisfied enough with his overnight rental and decides to buy the game the next day, or he can continue to rent the game several nights till he completes it then the companies lose.

Every ps2 game i've rented ended in my collection, sometimes i'd even return it the day i rented it...that may be a little suss.

Since I decided to buy a flashcard in the first place, I pirate; or else, I'd really be throwing my money down the drain getting copies of games I can already play; however, since I had AA1 and AA2 before I bought my card, I'm still going to buy 3 and 4. And not buying games isn't not supporting the videogame industry. Whenever someone buys a used game, they AREN'T, they're supporting Gamestop or whoever sells it who is rich anyway. Also, myself, one person's, contribution to this industry is so little that if you would want to call it support then you might as well hand your money straight over to the companies who make the games for the best way. Also, answering the question, I don't pirate everything, I still buy console games if I want a specific collection, because pirated games don't really exist as parts of collections.
Personally, I'll only call these "backups" on sites like gamefaqs where roms shouldn't be mentioned, but otherwise, it's really cowardly and I won't use that word.
I never need to try games, I extensively read reviews, even for games I pirate, and usually, I only end up disliking games I could tell were overrated; I make myself buy games that people really like sometimes because I can't gain interest of them, even from videos.
Large communities and groups of people pirating is the only thing that really rips off companies, so I wouldn't say I have anything to say about justifying pirating, EXCEPT that if it weren't for it, I would NEVER have became interested in so many things. I would never drop $50 on something like Band Brothers without the game receiving a ton of critical praise, which it didn't. But I have a rom and I loved it. Basically, if I didn't pirate I would have barely any games, at least on my handhelds.

Because recently the Nintendo distributor in my country went into receivership and now we have no Nintendo Distrubutor (Due to dwindling sales, unfortunately PS3 and Xbox 360 sell alot better here than Nintendo). Which means in the mean time what we have in the country at the moment is all we have. So that is my excuse to justify why I modded my Wii but no excuse is good enough its still wrong/illegal.

The answer is generally the same for everyone as to reasons, and not many people hide it on gbatemp (c'mon, you've been at this site for a year and haven't seen what's in all these release threads?). People pirate because they don't want to pay for it (that includes every con you can think of for having to pay for something), simple as that. However, part of your reason for pirating is complete stupidity. Who pirates games to feel cool?

For the excuses, I only think one of them is popular and legit reason to me. However, you seemed to do a bad job at filling those holes. It's not like the Wii is the only thing people pirate...Oh, and I seem to like some games I pirated a lot more then ones I have bought before...

For the people who say the company isn't losing money from you pirating, that's true, but they're losing the opportunity of gaining money.
