It isn't a handheld or a portable. It is a CONSOLE that CAN be used as a portable. Judging by the size and the fact that the n2ds xl is coming out it should be more than clear that this is not meant to be a 3ds successor. Its like people try to justify it's lack of power by saying its a handheld.

Its portable for me. I have not used it on my T.V. once so far. Plugged the dock in and that was that.

Uhmm, because it functions as a portable? Just like 3DS XL, you'll probably need a case, but just like 3DS XL, that doesn't seem to be bothering anybody. We 'Muricans like things big, including our portable systems. Regardless, if Switch's screen were any smaller it'd be hard to appreciate its rendering power, which is about equal to Wii U even in portable mode.

I would have purchased a 3DS if I could've gotten my hands on a non-XL.

Look at the underlying architecture.
Everything about its internals screams "portable".
Also... it is a tablet.
An nvidia-tablet.
It couldn't be more of a handheld if it tried.
No matter how many docks Nintendo throws at you, it is still a portable.

I've been using mine exclusively as a portable. Used the dock for initial setup only, and even then it was with a spare computer monitor (no speakers) so you can bet THAT didn't last long :P

Well, it's fine for 3DS because it's just 240p anyway. Stretching that out makes it look uglier.
Yeah, I don't need no XL for the 3DS. Happy with my Switch, though. While more portable would be more convenient, it doesn't seem to feasible. I'd be happy having a switch and a New 3DS non-XL to cover my portable gaming needs, depending on the situation. Too bad the black friday Galaxy 3DSes never came back, 'cause I was ready to jump on one of those.

Because it's a handheld/portable.

Wikipedia said:
A handheld game console is a portable self-contained video game console with a built-in screen, game controls, and speakers. Handheld game consoles are smaller than home video game consoles and contain the console, screen, speakers, and controls in one unit, allowing people to carry them and play them at any time or place.

You could have a poll whether people see it as a portable or a console.
I for one, sees it as a portable device with an additional feature of it being able to connect to TV. Like the old PSP. :D
