The entire FFVII series is overrated rubbish. FFVII only got the acclaim it did because it was the first 3D FF game.

No it didn't. Sure it was overhyped but as a complete work it's the best of the PSX games and merits repeat plays, followed by VIII then IX. VIII got broken by it's borked levelling mechanic and IX had a poor storyline, so-so characters and was far, far, far too easy. Yes it looked nicest but as a game it was the weakest.

People play VII and think they've seen everything, only later to realise that the story is more complex than they realised. And that's not fanboyism, that's me realising that what the game wants you to think and what actually happens are two different things.

All of the FF games are simplistic and easy post VI. The VII storyline is just so convoluted as to appear complicated. I've seen and played FFVII multiple times, and nothing changes. The characters and stories are shallow, with a hole dug to make it seem like there is more to it all. IX was no more easy than VII, though both of the aforementioned ones are easier than VIII unless you take the time to do what you need to do. The characters in FFIX are also far more interesting than the ones in VII, and the storyline is kind of a mind fuck of awesome by the end.

We'll have to agree to disagree. IX was dire and the characters possessed no reasons to empathise with them at all, bar Vivi.

I think you'll enjoy 7 8 or 9 the most... I'd pick 8, because it's my favourite.
But yeah,
Final Fantasy 1 and 2 for the PSP
3 for the DS
4 for the PSP (to get the sequel + updated graphics)
5 and 6 for GBA
7 and 8 for either PSX or PC
9 for PSX

Yeah, that's how I'd play them if I were you

I've played them all up to FFX.

The ones I liked the best were FF:VI and FF:IX. FF:III was pretty good on the DS.

Out of the PS1 ones, I'd say IX's my favorite, it's an interesting blend between the original pre-PS1 games and the PS1 era itself.

FF9 Spoilers:

I find that hard to believe considering Garnet lost all of her family. Freya lost her love, found him and then finds out he lost his memories.
And Quina... well... you just have to look at him/her and you'll feel sorry for him/her.

I agree, FFIX was a sad game, and a crapload of people die in it.

OP FF 4 complete collection!

FF7 3D engine did not exactly aged very well, early ps1 game but still a good story

FF8 get my vote too for the mature design and kickass SUMMONS

why play
FF Origins (PSX) FF1, and FF2

when you can play
Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition
Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition

the GBA version of FFV and FFVI may run better then the Ps1 versions

Because the GBA and PSP versions are "Easy Mode" of the Origins version. Plus Origins has better quality music over the GBA version. If you're choosing only between the GBA and PSP versions, PSP wins any day. It's the same game but with an added dungeon, better graphics and sound quality (plus a nice bug in your favor). But if you want challenge, Origins is the way to go. But just for 1. I never liked FF2.

So my vote goes to Origins, though FFIV:TCC is right there with it. Excellent remake.

It's a Final Fantasy game. PEOPLE DIE IN FINAL FANTASY GAMES. Deal with it.

Indeed people die in videogames.. Something that happens in nearly every story based RPG (or at least has some story in it).

OT: I agree with Issac's list and point towards VIII or IX for starters. I've got solid copies of basically all the numbered FF games released so far except the online version (no point in paying for an old online RPG not many people play anymore (FFXI)) and those would be the ones I'd start with because of solid gameplay and nice stories. Sure they could be better, but then again games like MediEvil are nice too and have a lot thinner plot (not being a RPG does affect it), but still are fun to play even after years..

He was talking about what he said in his post, not what I said.
