Unlike Mexico, China has 100% earned the US's ire. I have innumerable complaints about his policies in general, but my only two complaints on Trump's China policy is that it is too unilateral and too inconsistent. Also, remember the controversy with Russia interfering in US elections via US-based social media? China could do the same thing with Tik-Tok, but orders of magnitude worse. Whereas Russia had to rely on clumsy direct methods that anyone could use, the owner of such a platform could use far, far more subtle methods by directly modifying the algorithms that serve content to viewers. Such a method would almost certainly be far more effective and far harder to detect. Data collection is only the most obvious and arguably least dangerous of the potential threats.
