Gaming What's the best free Anti-Virus?

I've been making a lot of help topics heh. Anyway, I've recently have gotten a virus/trojan and I've removed it via safe-mode, however, AVG-Free never picked up the virus and I was unable to open it while being attacked (It kept on saying "AVG has been infected.") so I would like to know which Anti-Virus is the best? I just don't want to lose anything as my computer has some important documents (I know I should back them up but I have no way in doing so.) so thanks in advance!

For scanning, I use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Scanning and removal of viruses using MBAM is free; for active protection you need to pay. For active protection, I use avast! Antivirus. It's rarely let me down in the 3+ years I've used it. Avast has even picked up some viruses that AVG left behind. It updates automatically, it's fairly easy on system resources, and it's unobtrusive.

I suggest looking at the virus removal guide, stickied on this forum. If AVG didn't work for you, I'd try Avast.

People keep on recommending MSE... but it's Microsoft. I dunno if you guys are trolling or not.

According to the user reviews on CNET, MSE seems to do its job very silently and remain light on resources where Avast can slow down some computers. Well, I think I'll tear down Avast and try out MSE for a month or so, see how it works. I know my friend used OneCare a while back and LOVED it, but Microsoft deep-sixed that program. This seems to be their follow-up to that. I'll give it a try.

I work as an IT tech (on lunch now!). When scanning on machines we use a variety of virus scanners as there's no such thing as a virus scanner with total protection so we use malware bytes, combo fixer, AVG 9.0 and microsoft security essentials.
Microsoft security essentials is highly recommended as it has the highest detection rate.
Also never use Norton, we actually advise for it to be removed as it lures the user into a false sense of security (basically it has the lowest detection rate).

Avira free version hands down. It's even superior to the majority of paid a/v programs - including the overrated NOD32.

In the UK... It's Kaspersky.

All you hae to do is open a Barclays bank account and register for online banking, and they give you a 3 user license for kaspersky Internet Security. They also renew the license each year.

Microsoft Security Essentials. I had paid Norton, and I uninstalled that because the free MS one is better. It has never given me a false positive on keygens, etc. where Norton did before so if you're into pirating programs then it's the one for you!

Well I had a false positive on a keygen once from MSE but it doesn't really matter, it's still a good anti-virus. Been using MSE + Firefox with AdBlock Plus and NoScript and haven't had any viruses for months.

Avira is definitely the best. I use the free one because I really have no time to pirate the full one. The free one is absolutely stunning and works like a charm.
