Hey all, many of you know that GBATemp forum is created in 2002. Now, I'm wonder about what were you doing in 2002?

As for me, I was 14 years old and finished 8th grade in May 2002, so had to stay alone at home for rest of summer until I enter the freshmen (9th grade) in August 2002. At that time, I have PS2, GameCube and GBA, so played PS2 most of time. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire didn't came out until next year. The game I played most was GTA 3 and Crazy Taxi. GTA Vice City didn't come out until Oct 2002, so got one after got home from school. I played The Sims on PC and used internet regularly, so two forums that I used were Gamers.com and PlayStation. Cable TV was great in 2002 with variety of shows, so had to use VCR to record the shows. Windows XP was common, also there are good number of people still used Windows 95 and 98. Some used Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X Puma.

Time flies fast, whoever were teens in 2002 became closer to middle aged now. Whoever in 30s and 40s in 2002 became closer to retirement age now.

Remember about Nokia phone lol.

Glad to be 80s baby lol.

I would have been in first grade.

I had a classmate who's mom was a crossing guard for my school in the daytime, and a GameCrazy cashier at night. I used to look up video games on my mom's desktop computer, and then ask to go rent one if I got good grades. I had just gotten a GBA by trading in my GameGear and a broken Dreamcast.

I saw a game called Conker's Bad Fur Day. I thought the squirrel was so cute. My 6 year old self wanted the squirrel game so badly. At that point in my life, my favorite games were all cute mascot characters--Bubsy, Sonic, Spyro. So I begged my mom to rent me Conker. We went in and the cashier looked at me, and my innocent face, looked at my mom, and told her, "no matter what, do not let your little girl play this game".

I was SO distraught. I might have cried, or something. And that lady, bless her heart, she got down to eye level with me and told me, there's so many video games with cute animals in them that are better than the dumb squirrel game. And she handed me a copy of Pokemon Silver and said to rent that one, because there were hundreds of cute animals in it. My mom was adamant that Pokemon was evil, and un-Christian, but because I was so upset, she got it for me.

I spent that entire year doing nothing but playing Pokemon, watching Pokemon, eating Pokemon cereal. I was obsessed.

2002? I was in 3rd grade.
I was fresh out of my tonsils removal operation... dang I still remember that year.

By January 2002, I had given a Tamagotchi in "Dia de Reyes", so I was busy taking care of a Tamagotchi that never lived past 1 day... I swear ai kept giving the thing cake and playing ball but kept dying.
That same Dia de Reyes got my "Super Patineta" a Fisher-Price skateboard that can be turned into a Scooter.
My 3rd grade teacher was sick of some organ so she missed a lot of the year, so, most of the year I would go to school only to come back home by 7:20am because teacher was sick.

She eventually passed away, but I learned that in 2008 before entering highschool after a female schoolmate recognized me and she told me but I had absolutely no memory of her in any way.

Pokémon Tazos (Pogs) were popular so I also played Tazos with my friends, lots of gambling as that year I learned to play pitch-n-toss and the money I won got spent in cookies. 😂

EDIT: No wait... this was 2000... 2002 I was in 4th/5th grade?
Can't remember correctly...

Yes because I got my first doggie in 5th grade and she was born in 2001, so I was in 5th/6th grade...

Yeah, don't remember almost anything other than gambling/girls/first dog.

I actually remember exactly what I was doing summer of 2002: Playing Final Fantasy X. The reason I actually remember this so well was because after playing FFIX (AKA The best one), it felt so weird that the characters all had voice acting. It was huge adjustment to make. Even at 11 years old, I still read the text faster than the voice actors read it and it drove me nuts back then. I think I tried Xenosaga too and that drove me even more nuts with cutscenes.

Games with too many cutscenes still drive me nuts too. I don't think there's much that tops Xenosaga though.

I was in high school so probably getting stoned with my friends then walking a mile to Blockbuster to rent some games. After that we would hit up the comic book shop for some Magic the Gathering cards or play a few games. Then once we got home we would copy anime VCDs and DVDs to VHS, the quality was awful but none of us had high speed internet so that is how we got our anime. Played alot of roms and all the latest pokemon games via an emulator on an old HP pentium 3 with the speakers mounted on the monitor (Remember Nesticle!?!). Back then there was Gamespy, i played a lot of AvP on there online, it was a neat service. Before Steam there were several freeware game sites like Gamehippo that had hundreds of free games, which is where Cave Story got its start. Also grew up with brothers and some nights we would play 4 player Smackdown on ps1 with the boomarang multitap. Good times.

I was fresh out of my tonsils removal operation... dang I still remember that year.
I had my tonsils removed in October 1992 at military hospital in Maryland and had to stay overnight at hospital. My issue with tonsils started in 1990 that landed me in emergency room. After refused to wear CPAP at sleep study, their doctor ordered us to see surgeon to get tonsils removed. I was closer to 5 years old at that time.

2 weeks after surgery, I went out for Halloween in total dark after DST ended on Oct 25, 1992. A lot of children on street and some rode on bike. Military housing were super old and ugly lol.

My parents didn't bother to look at rating and when I rented GTA for second time, so my dad heard about how violent was GTA on local news and at first, he won't let me play but seconds later, he told me that I can play as long as I don't shoot at police. I'm just like... video game and it is all myth.

I started to play Pokémon in late 1998 and red version was my first one. I got GB Pocket for my birthday in December 1997. I remember about how extremely popular was Pokémon at school and there were too many thefts.

I remember about Warheads challenge at YMCA summer camp in 1998 lol.

I rented FFX at Movie Gallery in early 2002 and liked this game but it is too linear. I remember about all PS2 saves are unencrypted and we used memory cards to do save exchanges, also used CodeBreaker Save program to inject the save. I copied completed saves to my friend's memory card. Good ole time lol.

Peeing and shitting on my diapers probably 🤷‍♂️
It would be me in 1987-1988, lol. I had diaper blowout that got on my half brother's clothes and my parents made him go shower again.

Good one, my friend ripped VHS version of Jeepers Creepers from Movie Gallery to blank VHS tape and I took it to home to watch it. Yeah, picture quality was awful when compared to DVD. I met one classmate know about how to solder the game console, so he is big one in hacking.

My parents were too nice to have cable TV with digital tier and all premium channels (no Play boy, sorry), so I recorded with VHS and my parents got bulk blank VHS tapes from Sam's Club. I watched shows on Toon Disney, Boomerang and Nicktoons when they aired old shows. I remember about Toonami on Cartoon Network and FoxBox aired anime shows. Pokémon shows were on Kids' WB. I do think Adult Swim aired mature anime shows.

I was probably upside down behind my tv, absolutely blootered 😂
You...you're not Scottish, are you geezer? ;)

2002, I was 9/10 years old. Year 5 (fourth grade for the US, I think) so had only recently started middle school. My childhood companion, the Game Boy Advance SP, hadn't released yet, so I was probably playing a lot of Pokemon Gold on my GB Colour. No internet in our house yet, not sure we even had a computer. Simpler times.

I most certainly am, very well done on spotting that! Wasn't sure anyone would understand 'blootered' 😂😂😂

Ultima Online binge, and what an eye-opening experience that was. Could never get into the narrow, level-based, locked-class bullshit RPGs since. Plus it was a proper sandbox world to make up your own adventures, with real people, and just share all the glory and misery together.

Unemployed, and waiting to get into Job Corps. (1 year long waiting list, had to call every Wednesday to tell them you still wanted in.)

I was fresh out of Highschool in 2001. Used Job Corps to learn PC repair and it doubled as an escape from my abusive dad.

I think I probably started going to kindergarten/nursery school.

When I wasn’t in kindergarten or outdoors playing something,
I definitely watched TV on an old CRT. I remember watching Looney Tunes and Disney Stuff.
I think this was also the year/time when I first started watching Japanese Animes. Studio Ghibli Movies like Kiki’s Delivery service. And anime series like Doremi, Digimon, Pokémon etc. on a German TV Channel called „RTL2“.

Back then I was actually getting laid...

You missed out on booze, crap, and a helluva lot of fur...

Last edited by The_Dizzy_Vizzy,
2002 is one of the best years, period. I remember finding a TMNT game really hard, not sure which though. Or maybe it was a Rock Man game.

And music was actually good back then.

It was a time i haven't spent a time in the web yet, I discovered very first Ghibli movies, borrowed cd's with sorta of animes, reading manga/anime twomonthly released magazine, writing physical letters or met with fans of very wild and fresh fandom, draw images. Time of emulation sega, gameboy, snes, writing simple games in delphi. Playing Virtual Cop in arcade hall or Tales of the Float Land demo on PC. Altough I was offline it motiveted me to do exclusive things like anime gallery fanpage.
High school golden times when things supposed to be much simpler, It was just my time.
