I have a gateway coming in the mail tomorrow and I'm curious about the optimal card size. How large is the average 3DS ROM? Is there any disadvantage to a 64GB card?

The smallest 3DS roms are ~256MB big and the largest are ~4GB big. Because not all 4GB of space on a 4GB microSD card can be used for storage I would suggest using a 8GB card that would fit even the largest 3DS roms, but of course for most games 4GB or even a 2GB card would be enough. Also with a help of a 3DS Rom Tool you can trim the extra unused space from the larger 4GB roms files so they would actually fit on a 4GB microSD card and you would not have to spend the extra cash for buying an 8GB card.

Get a 64 if you are rom whore like most of us. They fill up fast. Make sure it is a class 10

I have a Samsung Evo 64GB. Works pretty great for me. Although I am trying to get most of my stuff switched over to .CIA installs.

Just make sure you get a real card. The first Sandisk 64GB card I got was fake.

It has been mentioned before those Samsungs are waterproof. That is important becuase if you drop your 3DS in the toilet at least you can reuse the SD card.

On a serious note make sure your internal SD CARD is at least 4GB for Smash and larger if you plan on installing cia files.
Get a 64 SD AND A 64 mSD there will be no end to the shovelware you can cram on there. :)

I'd also suggest installing CIA's or trimming the roms if you can, I saved about 15GB by doing that, a 4GB rom is usually not more than 3.3GB as a CIA, some 1GB games are closer to 500MB than 1GB, etc.

I'm currently using a 32gb, have about 26 games :). I trim all my games if they're card 1.
I don't like cia's cause backing up the saves is a bit awkward. (savedatafiller i think? never actually did it).

I like mass copy+pasting my saves once in a while :).

I dont really suggest installing them as cia's, if something goes wrong with your emunand...
64GB cards are fairly cheap so it isnt that big of a problem, just make to to buy a sandisk or samsung branded one (for reliability)

I got a 32 gig and I kind of regret not going for the 64. If you plan on filling it with a lot of games the space fills up way faster than you think it would.

I agree with Joe, cia files are more an advance level. Though you can backup your emnand and is highly recommended to do it often.

And NO, not all games can be converted to cia at this time. Don't ask me for a list. :)

Do you like messing around with your console more than playing games? Yes? Go cia, if not just use 3ds and 3 dz files.

I just have 2 32GB microSD cards for both red card and 3DS.

64gb cards are on sale for around $35 on amazon. That's what I got.

Haha, not in Kangaroo fun-bucks they aren't.

Alright, the gateway came in the mail today so I'm buying a 64GB. They're on sale at my local big box store right now. I'll grab the smallest one I can find for the blue card, too.

You will only need the blue card if you are downgrading to 4.x.

I'll eventually get a 128gb. But until it drops in price and I think of more roms to download, 64gb is more than enough.
