Another option would be to just stick the 64gb micro sd you already have into a full size adapter and just go the fully cia route. It's nice to have all your games available on your homescreen without switching using the gateway menu. My gateway is basically a boot card for emunand and doesn't even have an sd in it most of the time.

Hmmm interesting point... so if I use .cia for all of my games, I would never need to boot into Gateway mode? Sorry, I'm still learning about Gateway...

My red card uses a 32gb mSD and my internal N3DS uses a 16gb mSD for cia's.

Thanks! I think I'm going to follow the general recommendation and get a 32GB for the console. They're around $15 which isn't bad at all. I'll use the 64GB for the Gateway itself (for games like Xenoblade, etc).

Thanks for your responses all

You still need to boot into gateway mode but you won't have to press select to bring up the gateway game selector. All your games will be on the home screen showing their banners. To be honest it's down to preference really, i just like all the games instantly available and i only need the gateway card to boot up.

Multiple 3ds's can share a single gateway cart if you install all the games as cia.

My cousin uses my gateway cart to boot into gateway mode and has tons of games installed as cia. He just never turns off the 3ds.

64 gb on both.

Mostly because the didn't cost that much more then a 32 GB, and then because I want to be future proof. While the homebrew emulator scene is currently just a couple, I'm guess in a year we'll have a bunch. Not to mention it's nice having CIA's of games you play all the time on the system since the GW card tends to suck more battery when it's plugged in.

The GW SD card didn't have to be 64 gb, but as i said, it wasn't much more then a 32 gb card. Plus honestly, I don't like to pop out the sd from my gw that much because the construction isn't as sturdy as I'd like.

64gb for internal n3ds, 64gb for GW red card, 32gb for the dstwo. I have noticed since there seems to be little to no interest in making cia files out of n3ds games I am migrating most of my bigger and most commonly played games to my internal sd card and giving space to the big size of the n3ds games

Hmmmm. Thanks for the responses all. What I did was... I'm getting ready to get a N3DS XL (9.0). Since I have a 64GB micro, I purchased a 32GB micro as well. I'm going to use the 64GB for my internal and throw the bulk of my games on there (including all online games), and I'll use the 32GB (gateway) micro mainly for games that are over 4GB (since the internal card has to be FAT32 and Gateway can accept exFat). I guess the only game that would be that large would be... Xenoblade maybe?

Honestly? If you're planning on using the Gateway and you have the cash to spare, get yourself a 64GB mSD for the 3DS slot and a 32GB for the red/blue card.

I say mSD because if you want to use it in a N3DSXL you'll need a mSD, but the adapter works for the O3DSXL and there *is a way* to use more than 32GB on O3DSXL if I remember correctly. (requires hacking?)

Just go nuts and get as many .CIAs and avoid ban hammer. The Gateway can even transfer savedata, so go nuts. Nintendo even has a cart>eShop savedata tool you can use for free, but Gateway is soooo much better.

For more moderately priced, stick to 32GB. Again, go mSD and use adapter, blah blah blah.

There's lots of reports on "fake" cards and certain manufacturer's not working, but really, if you know how to properly delete and rebuild an mSD it doesn't matter.

GET CLASS 10!!!! This is the only thing that will make a big difference. Some SDXC cards and "Ultra" cards are simply using UHS-1/3 that speed them up in a PC, but I'm pretty sure that's what causes most conflicts on the 3DS and Gateway and Sky3DS.

STICK TO CLASS 10!!!! Try to avoid UHS-1/3 and SDXC cards or "ultra" or "extreme".

Get a mSD>USB adapter. Most retailers include one with purchase.

Again, don't drop more $$$ than you need to. The more bells and whistles the more problems you'll have.

You want to aim for a BASIC CLEAN CLASS 10 SDHC mSD CARD.

64GB should be plenty to work with. But 32GB is so much cheaper. 128GB is expensive (like $100 worth of expensive) but man... imagine all the games and homebrew tools/apps. Problem? Most 128GB mSD are SDXC UHS-1/3. So you might have issues using them.

Here's a good place to do a little reading about SD cards:

Gotcha, thanks man. I currently have a 64GB Sandisk Ultra Plus (class 10) that I'll be using for the console itself, and just purchased a (Samsung? Too lazy to look it up) Evo 32GB micro for the Gateway itself

Check if either of them are SDXC or mention UHS-1 or UHS-2. Avoid those.

Stick to SDHC Class 10. Fin. Punto. The End.

Might also want to go to Filehippo.com and DL EaseUS Partition Master (free). So much better than using Windows. Just don't format your PC HDDs. Not kewl.

It's an awesome tool that will help you unbrick any SD card or hard drive. Even has some great backup features.

Hopefully you didn't spend more than $100 on all your mSD needs. Try to stick to Newegg or major retailers. EBay has some tempting offers, but you're risking it.

You should be able to buy:
64GB SCT for $32.oo
32GB SCT for $15.oo

That brings a total of $62.oo (free S&H from Newegg)

Heck, you could even go big and just get x3 64GB mSDs for the price of one 128GB.

I got 2x 64gb and 1x 32gb direct from amazon plus free shipping for $58 about a month ago. If you do go with amazon just make sure they are the seller and not a third party

Uh oh.

Well I definitely didn't spend around $100. The 64GB & 32GB were around the $32/$15 amount. I always purchase memory cards online and never in stores like Wal-Mart, etc.

However, the 32GB card is a Samsung Evo, micro SDHC Class 10 (48MB/s Read with UHS-1, 21 MB/s Write with UHS-1).

The 64GB is a Sandisk Ultra Plus micro SDXC UHS-1, Class 10.

You should be good. It's hard to find any 64GB that aren't SDXC, just as long as they are class 10.

I know I sound like a broken record, but CLAS 10, CLASS 10, CLASS 10.

If they were ONLY UHS you might have a problem.

Especially avoid those made for digital cameras. Those tend to be the worst unless that's what you are going to use them for.

Basically the 3DS should be okay with UHS but the flashcarts are picky about it. As long as they have Class 10 that's what they'll use. Just don't expect the UHS speeds. They'll ignore that.

If they don't even have Class X then you're asking for it.

Haha I don't mind the broken recordness at all. I appreciate ALL help that I can get. I wanna make sure I don't screw anything up. Thanks for the confirmation on everything. I can breathe easy now!

Mine is a Samsung 64GB Evo Micro SDXC UHS-I U1 Class 10 - 48 MB/s which i use in a full size adapter. Works perfect and fast booting emunand. It's great not worrying about how much free space you have.
