Anime... it's just the first 3 syllables of Animation, but when you write the word in Katakana, as in アニメーション.
 
"anime" is short for "animeshon" which is the japanese spelling of animation

"anime" in japan encompasses everything animated, also from other countries,
while the rest of the world uses the word specifically for japanese animation
 
A Japanese cartoon that is more so structured like a drama instead of an episodic sitcom as western cartoons are. There is character development and progression. Each episode builds upon and continues from the last until you see the story play thru.
