The loading times on that video seem very quick, but I don't have the original game to check. Does anyone know how the loading times on the video compare to the game on disc?

I wonder if it's possible to combine this with Nintendo's future update to load from an SD card. If it's an proper update and SDHC is enabled, this could be very interesting.

nintendo will not add load from sd, they are just gonna ad support for downloading straight to sd, so you can even buy games in the shop channel if you dont have enough blocks

Are you sure? Well, they said that they were going to solve the storage problem, so that wouldn't be the best option, as we all know. I guess we'll just have to wait for a bit...

This is not an epic fail, since it shows that Wii games can load from other sources then from a DVD and with USB 2.0 on the horizon, HDD loading will be possible

Er, no. It doesn't. It only shows that it's possible to run a disc game from NAND as a channel with some modifications and repacking the partitions as U8 archives. Unless someone has a demo of games running off an external device (or channels) then don't get your hopes up.

I use a 320 gig western digital external drive ATM for ALL my nes, snes, genisis, gba roms as well as all my mkv,mp4,avi,divx,wmv,wma,mp3 EVEN BOOT.DOL AND BOOT.ELF FILES VIA USB EXTERNAL DRIVE! (wad manager by waninkoko is the worst usb based app ive used granted that one needs work) but the rest work at 100%!

I have more faith than you in the collective scenes will

Emus all support external hdd HAVE THESE IN CHANNEL FORM

UNOFFICIAL geexbox works a treat! for usb media....HAVE THIS IN CHANNEL FORM

Homebrew apps and games with LoadMii app that lets you load elf and dols via usb external drive

HAVE THIS IN CHANNEL FORM

So i ask is it really that far fetched with the usb 2.0 hack or are you being a negative person about the very real possibility
?
It's certainly not far fetched at all. What's needed is a custom-written apploader, and possibly a disk patcher to make games work properly (although it would certainly have compatability problems) now that CIOS USB2 has been made (though I understand that the driver works nowhere near Hi Speed rates currently). What I'm saying is that this particular app does not have anything to do with it. WADs and Disks have a very similar structure (except that disks use partitions as opposed to U8 archives), so this isn't really a huge step towards USB ISO launchers.

Iv'e just tried my brothers USB device and can get 25,000+kbp/s, that's certainly fast enough.
Best for everyone just leave these threads and speculation to themselves, and let the guys who's doing it get on with the job.

Wii DVD read speed = 6x = 8000K~ (that's kilobytes, not kilobits)

The device used for storing Wii games must be at least that speed for accurate results... That said, we know wii games are at least playable at HALF that speed (3x = 4000K~) since that's what softmods and early mod chips ran at... So as long as the USB is capable of 4000K it's entirely possible to play backups from that standpoint.

You can Raid a external HD to add space onto your internal HD on a pc or mac i have both hehe If someone could raid an sdhc or USB we can fool the wii into having more space and loading isos compatibility will suck at first but itll be all good eventually

there was a comparison that showed softmods actually read at 3.66666666666666X, just fyi.
that is, if you compare the actualy (not theoretical) speed that the wii drives read originals, and establish it as "6x", the speed comparison shows the comparitive speed on the same drive to be 3.6666x for backup loaders.....whatever that means in the end.

I never bother with this but...

although that was done by "Setting" a wiikey to 3x, the result is the same.

you are probably talking about raid1, and don't take this the wrong way but that is a horrible idea trying to accomplish something like that. let them use external storage and address the data there.

Any idea if this would work with they system 4.0 update? Seeing how the wii can now load games off the SD card like it does with the NAND.

Unfortunately it doesn't run them from SD, it copies them onto NAND then automatically deletes them afterwards And it would only work with 4.0 if you had them installed before the upgrade

an usb game loader is going to happen, in the not-too-distant future.

Loading games from internal USB and SD ports are nice hypothesis. But don't forget that FlatMii is reality.

I imagine a sort of FlatMii 2, with hard disk controller integrated, as more likely solution. Am I wrong?

I wonder if its possible to load a portion of what is needed from the game(which is stored on an sdhc card or usb 2.0 supported hdd maybe a sata drive) into NAND run that portion then delete it and load another portion of the game when needed.

Not to mention how horribly hard that would be on the NAND. You're talking about a space that is only meant to be written to a few thousand times... Beyond that the flash will become damaged... and if you're constantly swapping out data to and fro from a DVD you'll burn through that very fast.

What is the NAND, I mean, ACTUALLY? Is it a flash memory drive (512mb), or something like a RAM memory... I am completely noob, so could somebody explain to me really nice?

Ok. Now I got it.

So what is the NAND doing the rest of the time..??

That is what it is designed to do. Nintendo's newest update depends on constant data going to and from the NAND.

But he basically right even if Nintendo NOW doing the same for VC/Wiiware Games.
Flash memory (SD Card, NAND and so on) has a limited Write/Read access but this does not mean that your flash is destroyed let´s say your flash supports 1000 times writing or reading after this 1000 times it´s possible that there you will lost some space on your flash memory. Of course this depends on how good the flash memory is.

This keyboard is only rated for 1000088789909878 keystrokes so I'm not gunna use it anymore.

My car has an expected lifespan of about 250 000 miles. gunna stop driving now too.

I would much rather use the things I own than live in fear that if I use them I will break them.
