Some success with a cheap SD adapter using a Kingston 2GB Micro-SD...
only some as I cannot install games, the loader stops at the disc install either before copying (0.00%) or very early on in the copy (0.98%).
I have tried both an original and backup disc with my chip in and an original disc with my chip removed.

Not sure if this is a problem with the SD card/adapter or something else.

I'm using 300 GB Maxtor Diamond Max 10 3.5 IDE HDD model 6L300R0 with IDE to USB adapter.
Installed RE Umbrella Chronicles (3.97GB), No problems so far...

would be great if any one made it work whit an external burner...

am i really the only one interested in this?

i see only vantages

1-play all the backups that you already have burned
2-enjoy the more than 6x
3-not waste the wii lens life
4-no need to make backups all over again

So right ! But how ?

The real deal is to have :
- A soft which format HDD on any system
- A soft to dump on formated HDD

But, Wii ISOs aren't dumpable on any DVD reader ...

I,ve just got 3 usb pen drives to work that would give error 01 by hot swapping them with a usb drive that works.I formatted a drive that works and placed it back in the wii, when it asks to format it in the Wii I then hotswap them out with the error 01 drives and they are then recognised.

Tried a 2 gb Kingston data stick last night- All identified correctly and formatted but I only tried to copy Monsters v Aliens and it stoped at 56% - i suspect that the drive was full.

Was able to put drive back into Mac and refrmat back to FAT no problem.

Also when I was doing the copy i had a USB charging stand plugged into second USB port and did not cause any problems.

I have just bought a IOMEGA 250 GB external - USB powered and will give it a go tonight! Fingers crossed.

Tried a Maxell 8GB USB Retractable Flash Drive Memory Stick without success at first. However, as it came factory set with an extra 2MB read-only partition called SECURE, which contained a lame ass application called LOCK (used for password protection); I thought this might be causing problems - I was correct! After trashing both the main PUBLIC partition and the SECURE one I created a new single partition and all works perfectly now

Thought I would post this incase someone else was getting the same problem. Other memory sticks with a small read-only partition may also suffer from the same fate so this maybe a generic fix?

I have a 320gig WD my passbook, running off the wii usb power and it works like a charm. got it for mplayer and geeXboX and now for this. No problems.

This is my one.

did you format or partition or do anything to the drive before you got it working?

And you use both or just one usb port for it ?

It`s just one usb port, but its plug and play. the program will partition and format for you. and you are all sweet.

for everyone with devices that work/doesn't work, please add them to the wiki, then everyone can look at it without having to read all the other posts in this topic

I have a Fujitsu Siemens 500 GB drive that I can't get working. (Storagebird 35EV820)
Its behaving pretty strange. The first time after I have re-partitioned or formated a partition or something like that, and I plug it in the Wii and start the USB loader, the text part of the screen just stays black. All the graphics appear, but there is no text. I've waited a few minutes to see if anything happens, but it don't. Then if I reset the wii, and go back into the USB loader I get the unable to initialize error, and I get it every time until I put the disk back into the computer and fool around with the partitions.

Does anyone have any idea. Should I just give up?

I don't know who actually makes the USB stick I have used, but it's an 8GB Duracell, and it works great. I dumped GHWT, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Play, and Wii Sports with no trouble at all.

I hope to get a nice slim, white 160-200GB drive to strap to the Wii, but for the time being, I will get an enclosure to toss a 250GB Maxtor into and test that.

I've a look at all this post, and i think perhaps there is a size limit! If wa take attention, genrally, DD equels or over 500Go don't work!

not dump, i just wanna load them

Just a heads up for people having a bit of trouble having the loader recognize / format their USB drive.

Loader kept freezing whenever I tried using my 2g sandisk stick, wouldn't even give me an error would just freeze soon as it started. So I tried formatting it using fat32format.exe. That worked, kinda -- the loader recognized it no problem, but when I went to format it none of the partitions were able to be formatted. Out of sheer frustration, because nothing else I tried worked I slipped in my Windows XP setup disc and rebooted the computer to boot from the disc and go through Windows Setup.

Once I got to the section where you choose the drive to install, I simply deleted the partition from my flash drive and created a new partition within the setup program. Now the USB stick works fine, loader recognized it and formatted without issue. Your mileage may vary, of course -- but its something to try if you're having the same issue.
