I connect to just one USB port.
My enclosure has one USB cable for data and one Power cable for power.
Some enclosures have a USB cable with a double end so that they can use two ports to get enough power so they don't need a power cable.
There have been reports of such drives working.

only game so far (installing brawl now) i can't get to work is metroid 1 remake.......it's a launguage patched verion so thats probably why.......but it worked on backup launcher

Ok but if you use one with no external power like the WD 320, do you have to connect both ?
I would like to use i.e. the mic. but don't know how well the drive and mic will work if you need to use a usb hub.

I used a very old 40GB hard drive I salvaged from an old PC, chucked into an external exclosure and all is working awesome

Wish I could say the same. Old Toshiba 2.5" 40GB in an enclosure not working. Tried deleting and creating new partition, tried both USB ports.
SanDisk Cruzer Micro 1GB, not working either. Again tried new empty partition and both USB ports.
Kingston Data Traveler 1GB, no go. just left it as partitioned and formatted but didn't work in either port.

Running out of USB removable storage devices...

**edit** forgot to add that the Sandisk Cruzer Micro doesn't give the 'USB subsystem' error but just freezes the loader app. The light on the USB drive keeps flashing irregularly and only the power button is received as input.

Ok, I can confirm that a Seagate Freeagent GO 320 gig 2.5 inch USB powered drive works a treat. Copying over Rock Band 2 now, will let you know results when it finishes. Going to take around 24 minutes by the looks of things, long time.....

Nope, cut open the crappy blister packaging (cut my self in the process) ripped it out of the box, ran all giddy like to my Wii, plugged it in and voila, working.

Would be happy if someone can post all these Informations in the Wiki, or everybody post it there. Link is in my Sig (klick on Image). I have no time right now, writing a test in 5 Mins

Just in case, remove all GC memory cards, controllers, and anything plugged into the other USB port aswell.

When I have 2 things plugged into the USB slots, it fails.

Ah, I can't disconnect my GC mem card easily (internal soldered mod) and I also have put a wavebird receiver in there, though that has a switch to disable it.
Can anyone test to see if GC mem cards or controllers interfere?

would be great if any one made it work whit an external burner...

am i really the only one interested in this?

i see only vantages

1-play all the backups that you already have burned
2-enjoy the more than 6x
3-not waste the wii lens life
4-no need to make backups all over again
