I must be messing something up, if someone could be kind enough to help me. I installed the USB Loader GX channel and the page says I no longer need an SD card (unless I want to have box and disc art and such). However, my USB Loader GX channel will just reboot my Wii with no SD card in it. If I stick the card back in, it works. I installed the channel with the latest WAD installer. Can anyone give any advice? Thank you!

PS: If there's a way yet to store disc art on the hard drive rather than the SD card I'd appreciate info on that too. My SD card slot is VERY finicky and this would help me greatly.

and about the cover storage on your usb drive, you can do it on a FAT32 partition.

Full FAT32 (cover+games on the same partition)
partitioned FAT32+NTFS games
Partitioned FAT32+WBFS games

Thanks for this (love the avatar by the way...in case you didn't know it's from a special trading card set they released in Japan).

However, I know there is a channel and a forwarder. The forwarder is launched in the Homebrew Channel. However, the channel shows up just like a Wii channel. But doesn't work if I don't have the SD card in. I thought the channel should be residing on the Wii's system memory?

@RockmanForte :

Your computer can read Windows disk format (NTFS or FAT32), and isn't compatible with Wii format (WBFS). That's why your computer ask you to reformat your drive (only the Wii can read it)

At the beginning, the Wii could only read WBFS formated drive, and couldn't read Windows format. That's why the Wii ask you to format your ntfs to wbfs if you are using an old version of usbloader.
But if you format your drive to WBFS using USBloaderGX, your PC can't read it using Explorer.
You will need to use programs to manage the content of your disk if it's formated in WBFS (Format to wbfs/view/copy/delete games), you can use WBFS manager 3.0, or Wii Backup Manager, or any other available

What's new :
The Wii can now read Windows formated drive, but you need a recent USBloader_GX revision.
If you want to use .iso, you will have to update usbloader_gx, so do not use 1.0
Download the 883.dol from here

rename it to boot.dol and replace it in your SD:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol
delete sd:/config/ folder too, so it will create it again but with newer file's format.

Format your USB drive back to NTFS.
create a folder names wbfs
(like this USBDrive:/wbfs/)
in this folder you will have to put your games.iso

The games must be renamed to match their game's ID, you can do it manually, or use Wii Backup Manager to copy your iso to your usb drive, it will be done and renamed automatically.

The filename must be
xxxxxx_whatever you want.iso
xxxxxx = game ID (you can find game's ID on http://wiitdb.com)

For example, new mario need to be (if it's NTSC version) :
USBDrive:/wbfs/SMNE01_new_mario.iso
or
USBDrive:/wbfs/SMNE01/SMNE01_new_mario.iso

last edit :
Ok, I think I'm done editing again and again, and I finally wrote a fully explicative message, with links and all.
I hope you will find it useful.

I did follow your instruction and the message coming up fine but I have no idea how to find the iso from USB Loader GX ?

I think I got it.. I have to use WiiBackupManager0.3.3 and I can see this game on the list but when I run it and i got black screen. Do I need to put SMNE01.DOL in the SD directory ?

EDIT: I did put SMNE01.DOL in the SD directory and go to USB Loader GX to find the .dol and save and I still got the black screen. HELP ?????

The forwarder exists in both .dol and channel format

There exists :

- r888.dol :
Or any other revision version. This is the main loader, run it from Homebrew channel. It's not a forwarder but the current version.
rename and put into media:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol

- forwarder.dol :
used to install on the Wii using preloader, to run USBloader at Wii powerON
it will load this .dol instead of the Wii system menu, and so redirect to load the media:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol

- forwarder channel (channel ID : UNEO) :
used to have a channel on the Wii, but launch media:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol
(it's the default path, but if it finds another path in media:/config/gx global settings file , it will use this one.
usefull to update boot.dol manually, or test new beta, etc..
This one is launched from the Wii menu, not the homebrew channel

- USB loader channel (channel ID : ULNR) :
it's the self, fully functional version (no SD or second partition is required), it can auto-update from online update check.

@RockmanForte :
It's either an error from your Wii IOS installation or usbloader_GX version (take the latest one, now it's 888.dol).

I forgot to tell in my previous message :
you need to install Hermes cIOS 222 (37 merged 38 is working great) if you want to use FAT32 or NTFS drives.
then, delete your config folder on your SD card (so the loader will automatically rewrite the good preferences for NTFS, and select the path accordingly (it will detect your games))
Then, when you connect a NTFS drive and run usbloaderGX, it will load this IOS222 (instead of IOS249) and find your games.

If you are using Wii backup Manager, and seeing games, then they are correctly installed.

Thanks so much for the helpful reply! Was just wondering, what's the easiest way to install a WBFS partition and FAT32 partition on the same drive? I'm used to just doing the drive 100% WBFS. Thanks!

You will losed your wbfs data if you already have one.

I used Windows disk manager.
go to start menu/config pannel/admin tools/computer something (argh I don't know the english conterpart, sorry
tongue.gif
)
click on the "stock" and "disk manager" (sorry again)

Find your disk, and delete all the partitions. (or the one you want to use for the Wii)
Then choose "create new partition"->principal, select a size (for example 30GB) and format it to FAT32, choose "quick format"
Then repeat with your remaning space, "create a new paritition"-> principal too. format to NTFS, quick too.

Now you need to "activate" the partitions so they are working on the Wii.
Right click and choose active.

although, I just check my HDD, the paritions are not marked as active anymore. you can try it like that.

Choose a drive letter if you didn't or want to change it.
Now you can use it as is (ntfs with wbfs/ folder), or format the 2nd partition to WBFS (use a manager, not the Wii as windows might not let you add a drive letter)

This was if you already had a wbfs.
Now, if you only have a NTFS and want to create an additional FAT32, you can do it without loosing data.
There are partitioning tools which let you do that.

Note that for the Wii to recognize them (but more to avoid TOC bug), you will need to create 2 "principal" partition, no extended one.

Just one partition can be active. It's best to use the FAT partition as active as it seems that many apps need it as active.

Everything seems to work find with my USB Loader GX

I can play backup discs, play iso's from usb HDD, copy games to USB HDD...etc

But when I load USB Loader GX I get this quick message on startup...

Reloading into IOS 236
IOS 236 not found Starting up
Initializing USB
reload IOS 249
Initializing WFBS

I tried different boot options...222,223,249,250, all same message

What is this IOS 236 it is looking for?

On the modify hack for my LU64 4.2 U there is no mention of a IOS 236

Again all seems to work fine, but what is that message I am getting?

I can update through the GUI, but a member said he has a black screen now after updating his app...

I don't want to go there because I am afraid of the dark,,,xD

use a newer version, it will not tell you "ios236" and then Giant Pune will be happy that this question is not asked anymore

This is nothing to worry about, it's not an error.
It's just a possible slot for a cIOS (copy of IOS36, placed into IOS236) you don't need it, so it's no more showing it's trying to load it you on newer version.

About the new rev's black screen, it was with rev885.
Use the latest 888.

rev 889 is much slower loading, doesnt remember my background sound, and it cant find the .gct files despite them being on the sd card in the correct folder... when you go to custom paths, and look at the sd: directory, its all blank, but usb appears correctly.. (all works in 883)

something clearly broke this build..

The wad is installed to a wii channel, but that channel searches your config file to see where the update path points to.
If you had an all hdd setup you wouldn't need an SD card.
Install the channel version of usbloadergx to not have to have an sd ard in all the time.(your settings will be lost probably, and I wouldn't recommend it since it's updated a lot.)

Pity you can't have an all ntfs drive with settings and covers on it with the games.

since most of the homebrew doesnt support ntfs yet, you cant simply go all ntfs yet.. the hbc wont read a ntfs drive... neither do channel fowarders...

lets see.. loading speed back to normal level (even faster now), sd card listings now are there.. the only remaining issue is that it keeps reverting to the default background music and not your custom choice, eventhough it says your song title on the custom song menu, it always loads up the default built in song..

Ok. Thanks for testing. The custom music stuff needs a complete renew later anyway
