Been trying to get this hard drive to work with the vWii and I've had no success so far. I have...

- Reinstalled all the cIOS's
- Used a Y Cable (Before it didn't show up, but now there should be enough power)
- Checked if it works on my PC (it does, all the games are there in the right folder scheme)
- Used Loader IOS 58 (Shows the games but goes to a black screen)

It's currently in Fat32, and the drive is a 2.5 inch HDD in an enclosure. As stated before I replaced the cable with a y cable to feed it power but now I'm stuck here. Any ideas?

1. Are you using the back USB ports? The thicker end of the cable should be on the top port while the thinner end should be on the bottom port
2. Don't use IOS 58 for the loader, let it use the default cIOS option
3. Did you make sure you have d2x-v11-beta3 cIOS? Also is USB Loader GX up to date? (latest version is r1283)

1. Yes, I'm using the back USB ports. The blue / thicker one is in the top port (0)
2. When I swap it back to 249 (what I think is default) after getting past the screen and load a game it goes to black. I boot USB loader again with it on 249 and it's back to "Reinitializing Devices"
3. Yes, it's the beta cIOS and yes the USB Loader GX is up to date

If you boot the app without the hard drive plugged in does it boot? Can you load a game from the SD card? That will let you know if the cIOS is working or if the hard drive is the problem.
Yes, the game boots from the SD card just fine. I doubt it's the enclosure since I saw a post on reddit praising the very same enclosure I'm using (UGREEN 2.5 Inch Hard Drive Enclosure), but if there's really no other fixes or troubleshooting, looks like this hard drive (Toshiba MQ01ABD MQ01ABD100 1 TB 2.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk HDKBB96) isn't compatible

The wii u usb adventure. Good times. Some drives the vwii just hates. Can confirm, with 2 drives from the same brand even. Hope you can get it sorted. If you have the 4 cios that most people install (248-251) I'd try switching the loader to 250, but even if that works, I'd take it as a sign that your drive will not play nice most of the time.

You can make sure the drive is primary, active, and the partition table is MBR, rather than GPT, just to make extra sure.

It's the same partition table, I thought that was the problem initially before discovering how weak the power in the USB ports are. If you have any replacement internal 2.5" drive suggestions I'm all ears, or I'll even consider getting a 3.5" enclosure and a new drive if I have to.

Thanks

its pretty weird that it will initialize the drive with 58 but not with 249. Will it initialize with 251?

do you have a separate wii u drive for you wii u stuff plugged in to another port? Do you have ports in the loader set to 0, 1, or both/any? set it to 0 and make sure it saves if its anything else

Im out and about right now but I'll check if 251 works when I'm back. Also no I don't have a drive for Wii u, just Wii and GameCube exclusively, with the data cable in port 0 set to port 0 in settings

Edit: I tested the hard drive on an actual Wii and the problem persists (also reinitializing devices crash) I tried loader 251, it initializes, I open a game and it goes black.

did you try it on the wii without the y cable? the wii gives it enough power, so you can can troubleshoot the cable at least

a lot of y cables are trash

edit: which couple games are you trying, and are they large?

I used the normal cable and it doesn't even work, that's why I got the y cable. I don't know about them being trash tho, since no one online is suggesting a specific one, just saying I need one.

At first I tried Mario Party 9 then the Wii Bionicle game, no dice

okay I only mentioned those questions cause some of my games take a full 40-50 seconds of black screen to load, and one splitter cable i tried (a dual usb-a to usb-c) straight up fried a drive i have to the point computers cant even see it, had to get a refund, cause all y cables are technically out of usb spec i believe. So if it worked with a normal (non-y) cable, even only on the wii, that would mean its a y-cable issue. But if you used a normal cable on wii and it doesn't work, and a y-cable doesn't work on either, it's just a drive that doesn't want to work I think. Cause USB compatibility with an actual wii was not bad.

okay then, I didn't have the normal cable on the original wii just the Y cable, and I just checked and yep it still works on my PC. Yeah I think the drive is borked, this sucks

Sorry to hear!
Yeah it's just not a great situation either with the wii u, because you've got 2 competing problems:

1) y-cables are out of usb spec, and can randomly be wired badly/cheaply made
2) if you wanted to avoid using a y-cable, it limits your drive options, because although the wii u side likes powered usb hubs, youre dealing with its wii side that doesn't like them, so you basically have to go y-cable or a drive with a power supply and a single normal cord (I'll just note here that I got to enjoy the disappointment of thinking a hub would fix this exact problem for me....nope)

and then you with lucky issue #3
3) a lot of drives just don't play nice in general, so you're playing a lottery

I finally got a Western digital to work and then made a backup with a seagate

at least I can tell you it's probably not your fault lol
