Homebrew USB Hard Drive recomendation?

I'm thinking of picking up a USB Hard Drive in the 250GB to 500GB range so that I don't have to keep swapping games between my computer and my USB stick. I've heard that some models can't get enough power from the Wii's USB ports, and that others don't work on the Wii at all, so I'd like to know of some that are confirmed to work and aren't too expensive.

Also, I'm looking at this one, can anyone confirm if this will work for Wii & Gamecube backups for my softmodded Wii?

the hdd is 3.0 and the wii only uses usb 1-2.0 so no this cant work with the wii sadly(not 100%sure). try to find something with usb 1 or 2.0

Uh what? USB 3.0 is backwards compatable with 2.0, I use a 3.0 drive on my Wii

Also why would you even suggest a 1.x drive? Those are not worth it at all

I was under the impression that USB 3.0 devices will work just fine in 2.0 ports, they'll just be slowed down to 2.0 speeds.

I got a sandisk 256gb sd card. The usb Drive I had dangling in the back there was getting in the way of everything else. The sd card works great and games load fine.

That is correct. It's worth noting however that USB 3.0 drives seem to be less compatible, most of them still work fine though.

I thought the Wii only accepted SD Card sizes up to 2GB maximum?

EDIT: Besides, USB Hard Drives are a lot cheaper than SD Cards. The one you suggested is going for around $120 on Amazon, while I can get the same size USB HDD for just $30.

I think I had to format the card to fat16. I got it a while ago as a Black Friday deal. My games are all in a wbfs folder.

@HeavyMetalLoser: I have a 1tb Toshiba 3.0 HDD that works fine. I have also used a WD 320GB usb 2.0, a 500 GB Toshiba 3.0 hd. All powered by the USB port and have worked with no problems as of yet. Hope the one you ordered works out.

@HeavyMetalLoser When you get the drive before you throw loads on it check what partition table it has been set up with, I have a Freecom USB 3 drive, I could not get this to work properly until I discovered it had been setup with GPT rather than MBR. While you are under the bonnet it would be worth making sure that there is only 1 partition as well, if the HDD has been “Reclaimed” you may have hidden Windoze partitions on there that will cause hiccupps…

Games load great. I didn’t notice any speed difference between the sd card and my 2.5” usb Drive. I’m using cfgusbloader. My wii games are in a wbfs format. I use it for Nintendont too.

Cool. If I ever set up a wii for a friend who has a large capacity sd card and no usb hdd, that will be an option. Thanks.

Just go it today, and while when it's formatted to WBFS Wii games boot just fine of of it, I cannot get Nintendont to load games off of it. I've tried everything I can think to get it to work with no results. Please help here:
