We've all seen the studies trumpeting massive losses to the US economy from piracy. One famous figure, used literally for decades by rightsholders and the government, said that 750,000 jobs and up to $250 billion a year could be lost in the US economy thanks to IP infringement

And a government lying and making up figures surprises you?

When have politicians ever told us the truth?

Funny how the profits of these companies keep going up and up despite piracy. I'd go so far as to say that piracy is what's made many of these companies so much money. You would have never had downloadable music, apps, and movies without piracy.

All governments and agencies (not necessarily just the USA) will fudge statistics to shock and scare people. They've been doing this for decades. It's nothing new.

Most people who copy stuff would only purchase about a tenth or less of all the crap they have copied.

If there was no piracy then most of us would probably pawn about half or more of the shit we have purchased at Cash Converters or game swap stores.

Makes you wonder if they have taken any of these factors into account when calculating supposed loss of sales figures.

They needed something other than "morality" to get anti-piracy support. I mean, c'mon, it's like FREE ANYTHING that's not a physical object. Music, movies, games, programs, etc. Saying "Well that's wrong!" usually doesn't work on most people, especially kids. Saying "PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS AND MONEY DUE TO PIRACY!" speaks to some people.

But really, it's still free shit.

Because the cost of games keeps going up every few years. Funny how most PC games are cheap but console ones get really expensive all the time. And once developers have learned how to make games for certain hardware, there is less effort that goes into research and development for making a game because they know how to do the basic coding already. Gotta love it when multi-billion dollar companies piss and moan about lost profits yet they are still making hundreds of billions of dollars each year.

It's also interesting to note that the games that sell the most generally have the most replay value or some sort of factor that forces players to purchase it. However that isn't always the case, games like Call of Duty and Halo may have sold by the truck loads, but they obviously have little replay value because within a few months there are hundreds of copies sitting on store shelves while the less popular games that were purchased, are probably still sitting in gamers collections because they are good enough to hang onto.

maybe its not a lie but giving the maximum loss possible... like if they say tht 100,000 games have been pirated (this also being the maximum possible) then if the max price for a game is 100$ then they may say that they lost 10,000,000$
