Gaming updating 360s firmware

so i flashed my sammy drive fine but dont have a hdd for profiles and save games
i heard i need to update my firmware so my question is

is it save to update the firmware via xbox live or is there a better way ???

I assume this box is not JTAG capable https://docs.google.com/View?id=dnfmv5h_30dw33vpf4 (you make it sound like this will be an offline box so it is worth checking).

You can burn a disc (even a stock drive will allow you to do that), you can use a USB drive (not sure when that ability landed but it was not recent if so) or you can mod things and throw that around but that is way more hassle than it is worth.

no its not jtagable
it will be used offline
i think it has the first firmware that had avatars on it

just wanting to check the update will not be affected by my modded drive
