Hacking Updated R4i-SDHC 1.4.1 to firmware 1.56b

Yep.
I updated my DSi XL back in September 2011 to 1.4.3E and since then my R4i-SDHC 1.4.1 has never worked.
I updated the R4 (manually, via USB) when the 1.56b update came out two days ago with the hope that it would be working again. No such luck.
So today I learned after all this time that DSi XL accepts WPA2 security and updated the DSi XL to 1.4.4E in the hope maybe the R4 will work again. It still doesn't work.

I've read the suggestions of updating via a DS Lite but I don't have any unsecure/WEP networks nearby.

Do I need to buy a new R4 (such as R4i 3DS)?

You don't update a flashcart through wifi.

Hmm... I saw another post telling another user with a similar issue to update over WiFi, which is what led me to say that, but didn't see why it would make a difference :/

since you have a ds lite press settings update and plug in your ds and press start (if the start button is blanked out your outta luck buddy)

Sadly this is what I can't see, I get the current version box and that's about it.
I've ordered an R4 3DS, waiting for it to come now from China. Hopefully this will solve the problem
