Hacking Update without losing backup channel?

I was wondering if it is possible to always update the Wii to the latest firmware without losing the ability to play backups from the backup channel? Currently I'm running a Wii with 4.0 or 4.1 firmware and am able to easily play backups through the backup channel. By the way does anybody know what exactly is the latest firmware out for Wii? (sorry if I posted this topic in the wrong forum)
