I don't remember where I got this cable, but what it is can be described as this:

One end: A mini usb connector.

Other end: 2 cables, one seemingly for audio (white) and video (yellow), and a usb connector.

What's this thing for?

a standard mini usb connector? or a special connector?
could you provide a picture?
what you describe looks like one of the sony camera's cables, i used to have a sony camera with such cable..
if its a sony one, extremly likely it has a ferrite thing

but i bet my ass it's from some camera you used to own, or still have somehwere

20170302_153707.jpg Seems to be a special mini usb, considering it has those 3 cables going to it.
That's all I know, though.

really unusual it is using a mini usb plug and in the other end the 2 types of connectors...
the device most likely has a mode which you can select from usb into video out...
i still think it is from a video camera... maybe a dash cam?
i can't think of any other other device that outputs via composite, the cheap ass tablets sometimes use mini usb, but they do not output via composite.. (they have a shitty hdmi port)

I'm almost sure my Sony HDD camcorder from about 7 or 8 years ago came with the same cable.
i had a sony picture camera, they used a proprietary cable in the end that connects to the camera tough....
but it indeed had a usb type A and the composite audio video in the other end

Strange. I don't have any cameras or anything, and if I remember correctly it may have been bundled with a wacom tablet I have. It doesn't use composite though, and it only has a usb and avi input. No RCA or usb/mini usb port.
Still don't know what it's used for. Huh.

Maybe, just maybe I might have found what it was for.
I found an old camcorder that has a mini usb port and a mini hdmi port.
The cable was unused though. I assumed it was from something newer.

well the device couldn't use the composite and usb at the same time (unless if used usb to only get power)
because i don't think it's possible to transmit composite at same time while establishing a usb connection... in the same 4 pins... it's 2 different signals...
