Well, I guess I'll start it to go. Just post a reply with your info and I'll edit it in this post. Let's use a standardized method to test. Run the test more than once just to be sure. Use the quick bench.

Also be sure to include information about the card. Just follow my examples and any other relevant information you might want to note. Saying which games ran fine probably won't help since it'll grow too large. Instead, list problematic games and any other notes. I guess everyone should be encouraged to test Castlevania POR since that seems to be a big issue for these cards. The write performance shouldn't matter too much since it's only access when saves are stored. Read is the meat of the issue I believe so I'm only including that.

Also, the type of reader you use can GREATLY affect your performance. Example, I use to use the flash readers built into my printer. After I switched to a dedicated reader, wow. However, as long as the reader is USB2.0, should be good. I'm not sure about those little thumb usb reader that the R4/M3 bundles. I think mine ran kind of slow so I just used the dedicated reader.

http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index...?request=HdTach

Download HDTach 3.0 from the above link and test your cards! Use quick bench at least twice to get reliable results.

Please people! Try to include as much information as you can including where it's made. Just look on the back of the cards. As far as results go, I'll only list the fastest speeds you get if you try multiple readers. We're looking for the card's best performance, not the reader.

Notes: RETAIL, purchased from Frys Electronics. Fresh FAT16 format with nothing but the OS and DoS & PoR copied for my testing. SC(ONE) plays DoS intro perfectly and not a single crash on PoR either. The SC(ONE) gives it a score of "30" and I can run most games at 4x without any problems. SC.lite plays the DoS intro perfectly and not a single crash on PoR.

Notes: I bought mine at Buy.com and it is labeled as a Kingston 1 GB microSD. I used the Bonzai USB Flash Drive by SimpleTech, along with the included Kingston microSD Adapter, to test my microSD card. The card has the following on the back of it: "SDC/1GB 30785-001-A00LF Taiwan" Anyway, so far every game i have tried (except Worms: Open Warfare) has worked perfectly. MP3's included. The game i believe was just a bad file (in the process of finding a replacement to test)

Notes: Same 9in1 reader I tested my A-DATA Super 2GB with. Castlevania PoR: No problems whatsoever... Even trying to get it to lock up. Seems to play the opening video at a higher framerate than my a-data--could be just me though.

PQI 1GB [magikalfly]

Random access 2.3ms
Average read 6.4 MB/s
Notes: Purchased from Meritline.com Tested with USB 2.0 flash reader. I tested with the card almost full. About 900 megs on it. No problematic game so far. Intro to Castlevania DOS plays pretty choppy. No problems in-game though. Haven't tested POR. Edit: POR crashes...

Ridata 1GB [magikalfly]
Made in Taiwan (I think)
Random access: 3.2ms
Average read: 6.4MB/s
Notes: Purchased from meritline.com. Tested with USB 2.0 flash reader. Tried test with other readers as well and same result. I got it because it was suppose to be the fastest microsd card out there but speeds aren't as I had hoped. It also crashes on PoR.

Sandisk 512MB [jelbo]

Random access: 1.3ms

Sandisk 512MB [magikalfly]

Sandisk 512MB [zatelli]
Random access 1.7 ms
Average read 9.3 MB/s
Burst speed: 9.5 MB/s
Notes: Shipped with my cellphone. This card, which has some issues with problematic games (white screen which lasts a couple of seconds in most games (including nanostray, New Super Mario Bros, Castlevania POR) has benchmark stats specifications similar to those of my recently purchased Toshiba (J) 1GB uSD.

Sandisk 1GB [SpaceJump]

Average read: 5.2MB/s
Notes: Crashes rarely on PoR.

SanDisk 2GB [id242]
Made in Taiwan
Random access 2.4ms
Average read 4.2MB/s
SC(ONE) Score = 5
Notes: RETAIL, purchased from Verizon the day they were released. Fresh FAT16 format with nothing but the OS and DoS & PoR copied for my testing. I've found that my SanDisk 2gb MicroSD is absolutely horrible for transferring files to and from. On the SC(ONE) the DoS intro is unbearably choppy and the DS(ONE) gives it a maximum score of "5" (which is 2x). If i set the speed for anything faster than 2x in the SC(ONE) settings, many games freeze up during/or halfway through booting. The card works great on the SC.Lite though the DoS intro, about half-way into it, does not run smooth (but more smoothly than on the SCSD) and PoR gets random freezes.

Sandisk 1GB Ultra II [cornaljoe]

Random access 0.9ms
Average read 10.7MB/s
Burst speed 10.8MB/s
Notes: Purchased from a local Swedish store. (Kjell & co) SanDisk ImageMate 5 in 1 Reader.

Toshiba SDC-01G-T 1GB [111111111]
Made in Japan
Random Access : 1.7ms
Average Read : 4.3MB/s.
Notes: Tested with the R4 bundled USB MicroSD reader (different to all the pics I've seen on the net, a small translucent black one - seems quite sturdy/solid, if a little slow) which is obviously the speed bottleneck. I don't have any other adapter to test with. I've had absolutely no problems with this card - tested 50ish games so far (including both castlevania games) - except for the 'none realtime' in tony hawk downhill jam.

Toshiba SD-C01GR2W (SD-C01G) 1GB [DeathMonk]
Made in Japan
Random Access: 1.2ms
Read: 9.4MB/s
Notes: PNY multi reader. Castlevania: Works like a charm. Same results as my PNY SD-C01G. It's pretty safe to say that if you get a SD-C01G you're good... No matter what manufacturer.

Toshiba SDC-01G-T 1GB [Farami9]
Made in Japan
Random Access : 1.7ms
Average Read : 4.3MB/s

Toshiba 1GB [zatelli]
Made in Japan
Random access 1.2 ms
Average read 9.4 MB/s
Burst speed: 9.5 MB/s
Notes: Purchased from totaldiscountstores.com (which is an ebay store) Tested with a Sandisk mobilemate SD+ USB2.0 flash reader. My card was almost full when tested. Haven't had a single issue with any game so far, it even whips Castlevania POR. BTW, I've Run the quick benchmark test 3 times & the results I've posted are the worst I've got.

Transcend micro SD 512MB 80x [jocka]
Made in ?
Random access: 1.0ms
Average read : 7.8MB/s
Burst Speed : 8.0MB/s
Notes: Anubis/typhoon 8in1 cardreader USB2.0 81035. Formated FAT16 with 64kb clusters. Used in SCDSONE with no slow down in any game at all using 29/12/06 loader. SCDSONE red pcb score 2x but ive set it at 32x. I have often to reformat the flash-cart to get best results

TwinMOS 1GB [fryguy]
Made in ?
Random access 1.1 ms
Average read 3.9 MB/s
Burst speed: 3.9 MB/s
Notes: 514MB used on card. Tested with my internal noname USB reader. Tried Castlevania DoS intro, seems to run without any lagging.

TwinMOS MicroSD 1GB [Tokas]
Made in Taiwan
Random access 1.0ms
Average read 10.0MB/s
Burst speed 10.1MB/s
Notes: Purchased from Komplett.se. SanDisk ImageMate 5 in 1 Reader.

Topic notes: I included id242's results even though he couldn't get HDTach running. It's tough to compare because it uses a different means of measuring but his notes are sufficiently thorough that it should still provide useful information.

Edit: Magikalfly's tests appear to be invalid. It seems my reader is limiting speeds to about 7.4MB/s no matter what card I use.

Edit: It seems like a lot of cards are plenty fast. It depends on the reader. But if suspected "slower" cards are just as fast as "faster" cards, what's the real difference? I mean, comapro got pretty similar results between the Kingston Japan and Taiwan. But what matters in the end is if the flash cart likes it. If someone could just program a homebrew speed tester program, that way it would run off the FLASH CART's reader, which is the only reader and writer that really matters.

Man, I just ordered a Ritek Ridata 1GB. If PoR doesn't work perfectly, I may have to order a Toshiba/PNY card.... Getting the Kingston is a crapshoot. Danny from M3 said the Kingmax was good but..where the hell can you find that in the US?

Isn't this pointless as its clearly the reader that is affecting the results more than the actual card speed.

So you cannot read anything from these results.

Yes the reader does affect speeds. However, it has been said that the speed of the cards affect some games. Namely, PoR. It might too much to go nuts over just one game but this list is just for info. People can see what kind of performance they others are getting with their cards. All of these speeds, so far, are optimal speeds based on good readers. The only discrepancy is between cornaljoe's ultra and shaunj66's ultra. Perhaps shaunj66 used a slower reader but that's just speculation.

Bottomline, this is just just info. Not really pointless if it helps people.

@cornaljoe Your speeds seem much higher than shaunj66's. Did you use HDTach for the results?

@shaunj66 The ultra seems kind of slow now that we have another ultra to compare it to. What reader did you use?

A high speed USB 2.0 card reader. Let me try another one and repost the results.

I was also pretty shocked to see that Sandisk Ultra II 1GB had a slow-ass reading.
I hope it's wrong though, I was planning on buying that one.

Just a quick note -- the reader that came with my M3 Simply is a real piece. It gave shoddy read/write speeds to begin with, and took a crap on me the second day I used it.

I had it plugged into my compy's USB 2.0 port, and when it wasn't reading the card, I went to remove it. When I touched it, the unit was hot -- like, "I'm going to melt the plastic casing I'm in" hot. The damned thing shorted out on me for some reason. I have a 1-12 reader in my drive bay, so I'm still good, but I'm just posting this as a cautionary tale for anybody else.

SanDisk 2GB: SC(ONE) Score = 5
Made in Taiwan
I've found that my SanDisk 2gb MicroSD RETAIL (purchased from Verizon the day they were released) is absolutely horrible for transferring files to and from. On the SC(ONE) the DoS intro is unbearably choppy and the DS(ONE) gives it a maximum score of "5". If i set the speed for anything faster than 2x in the SC(ONE) settings, many games freeze up during/or halfway through booting. The card works great on the SC.Lite though the DoS intro does not run smooth and PoR gets random freezes.

Kingston 512mb: SC(ONE) Score = 30
Made in Japan
I replaced with Kingston 512mb MicroSD RETAIL (purchased from FrysElectronics) and have found that SC.lite plays the DoS intro perfectly - PoR does not crash. SC(ONE) also plays DoS intro perfectly and not a single crash on PoR either. The SC(ONE) gives it a score of "30" and I can run most games at 4x without any problems.

Both cards have a fresh FAT16 format with nothing but the OS and DoS & PoR copied to them for my testing.

I would run the topic's suggested program, but I happen to be on Vista which the program does not like.
