it seems that around 1ms random access(give or take a few tenths of a ms) flash cards have no difficulty with Castlevania.. Unfortunately, tawain-made TF generally isnt up to the task (I have seen a couple exceptions).

Same 9in1 reader I tested my A-DATA Super 2GB with:

PNY 1GB [P-SDU1G-RF3]
Made in: Japan
Random Access: 1.2ms
Read: 9.4MB/s

Castlevania PoR: No problems whatsoever... Even trying to get it to lock up. Seems to play the opening video at a higher framerate than my a-data--could be just me though.

I'm about to get a PNY myself. I'm having a friend get one from Fry's with specific instructions on the SD-C01G JAPAN label. Deathmonk, the part number is the same right? That P-SDU1G-RF3 is the serial number or something?

Looks like made in Japan is the way to go regardless of whatever brand you are using. Like it's a surprise anyway, they all probably come from the same place in Taiwan.

But I'm miffed about my Ridata...suppose to be 115x Hi-Speed...whatever the hell that means...

Kingmax is probably a big winner too. They even just announced a 4GB microsd...4 gigs....and freakin high speed too.

Looks like made in Japan is the way to go regardless of whatever brand you are using. Like it's a surprise anyway, they all probably come from the same place in Taiwan.

It is interesting to note that no mater where your MicroSD card is printed to have been manufactured (Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico...etc), the SD-to-MicrosSD converter that is included in these packages are mostly made in China.

well, I think the adapter is too simple to screw up anywhere. all it does is expand the contacts. 8 on the micro card, 9 on full sized sd. I'm guessing the extra contact for lock/unlock. But I mean, you gotta have some blind monkeys for QC if an adapter is bad..

In my previous post, I wrote that HD Tach wasn't able to run on my Vista machine - at the time, I didnt think the set the compatibility mode of the "hdtach.exe" program to "XP-SP2"... I have done so, and now the program works correctly on Vista. Here are the updated HDTach stats on my two MicroSD cards...

Average read 4.3MB/s
SC(ONE) Score = 30
Notes: RETAIL, purchased from Frys Electronics. Fresh FAT16 format with nothing but the OS and DoS & PoR copied for my testing.
SC(ONE) plays DoS intro perfectly and not a single crash on PoR either. The SC(ONE) gives it a score of "30" and I can run most games at 4x without any problems.
Additional notes: SC.lite plays the DoS intro perfectly and not a single crash on PoR.


SanDisk 2GB [id242]
Made in Taiwan
Random access 2.4ms
Average read 4.2MB/s
SC(ONE) Score = 5
Notes: RETAIL, purchased from Verizon the day they were released. Fresh FAT16 format with nothing but the OS and DoS & PoR copied for my testing. I've found that my SanDisk 2gb MicroSD is absolutely horrible for transferring files to and from. On the SC(ONE) the DoS intro is unbearably choppy and the DS(ONE) gives it a maximum score of "5" (which is 2x). If i set the speed for anything faster than 2x in the SC(ONE) settings, many games freeze up during/or halfway through booting. The card works great on the SC.Lite though the DoS intro, about half-way into it, does not run smooth (but more smoothly than on the SCSD) and PoR gets random freezes.

just got a Dane-Elec 1GB - it has the "SD-C01G JAPAN" text on it and my phone identifies it as a Toshiba, so it's almost certainly the same as the other Toshiba/Kingston Japan cards.

HDTach stats:
Random access: 5.2ms
Average read: 2.6 MB/s
not great results, but my SD reader is dodgy at best. i suppose the real test will be when my R4 turns up and I can try Castlevania on it.

Same card reader as my other two tests:

Castlevania: Works like a charm.

ps - same results as my PNY SD-C01G

pps - It's pretty safe to say that if you get a SD-C01G you're good... No matter what manufacturer.

fryguy was using a slow reader. Probably why yours are so much better Tokas. However, it seems that overall, you're getting MUCH better speeds. What reader are you using? Most of us are using USB 2.0 reader that should be of good quality yet we don't get speeds like yours.

Go for a Toshiba, PNY, Dan-elec, Viking. They're all the same. Or get the Kingmax 1GB. This is going by M3's recommendation.
