So I prolly be getting a HTC Shift X9500 shortly ;D
I already am in love with the design ect.

    Any Tempers experienced in UMPC's?
    Experience with this specific model?
Things I can do with it?
    Best Linux distro for it?
Things I should know about it?

Please don't come with things like "get a tablet" or "get Android" or whatever.
If I would get a tablet, I already done so.
I dun care about tablets nor Android.

While UMPC's are really cool, they never really got around to building one that wasn't complete shite.

Things you will need to watch out for:

    1. Poor driver support
    2. Extremely wimpy processor
    3. 1GB of RAM that uses microDIMM
    4. 40GB HDD (yes, HDD)

You will probably want to upgrade RAM to 2GB if you can in order to be able to run modern apps. Swapping in an SSD would help a lot too.

At the end of the day, though, you are going to be paying through the nose for an outdated machine that you can pour money into and see no appreciable benefit from.

As a hobby, though, it's great because that thing'll take you hours and hours and hours to get working right.

    Also, Windows 8.

I had to look up what the hell a UMPC was....

After finding out what it was, I remembered reading about them. They looked interesting but very niche.

Not small enough to fit in a pocket so phones beat them out for portability and not large enough to compete with a laptop.

I guess tablets kind of ate into what little market these things might have had?

They kind of remind me of the Atari Portfolio.... lol

    http://oldcomputers.net/portfolio.html

I actually wanted one of these things when they where new, would have made my long bus rides go by a lot faster.

Yer I already have been searching for a 2 GB RAM stick.
SSD, dun got the money for it when I get the thing but it's next on the list.

Dun care much, As in the OP, I like the design of it and it having a fully fledged OS.
Besides the physical keyboard is a must (can't stand touchscreen keyboards)
And yer, I got plenty of time so fiddeling with it for hours on end won't be a problem xd

    God no.
I'd rather set it on fire then install that monstrosity to it.
    Puppy Linux ftw!

If the seller responds (and hopefully still has it) 120 quid c:
Hardly been used + all the stock accessories are included.

Ahah, yeh not many people have heard of it indeed.
Welp I still got large pockets in me jacket and it seems like it just fits in me pockets of me sweatpants.
But since I'm almost never outside, I dun need to have it fit in me pockets.

    Tablets blow chunks imho.
Overrated and annoying (I prefer a physical keyboard over a fancy smancy touchscreen, call me old but meh)

    Never seen the Atari Portfolio.
Looks quite neat for an '89 device!

    Okay...

Well I wish you the best of luck with driver support then.

Post some pics and/or video of it running when your are done. I'm interested to see just how laggy (if at all) it ends up being when performing regular tasks.

I'm prolly going to use it for browsing/skype/youtube only.
Already searched for some info about Linux onto it and it seems to be supporting neatly.
Also, Puppy is a very lightweight distro ;]

I know that it isn't the best device nor can it run games or whatev, but I got a lappy for that.
It's purely a device I'll take along with me when I'm off to me mates etc.

But aye, if I can manage to make a vid if I get it I'll do a win7/puppy boot vid.
If I can remember it that is xd

It probably won't even load Youtube properly at 720p

Seriously, I love the UMPC concept, but they were ass-slow, and thus they died a painful death.

Too early, too soon. I guess they'll be back with Silvermont/Airmont.

    With me internet connection...
I'd be lucky if it even loads youtube >_>
Good day, I'd get a max of 100 KB.
It usually hovers around 25-50 KB/s

That's prolly cause the vast majority wants speed and high end specs.
I dun mind a little waiting.
    But yeh.
So much potential, so little time to show it :c

How much exactly did you pay for it?

If you paid more than $250 for it... srly not worth the money.

The specs are terrible. The 2013 Nexus 7 has better specs for less money. There's basically not other way to describe it. You'd be better off getting an AMD APU-based netbook.

If you paid under $250 for it... congrats. You got what you paid for.

    125 quid including postage c:

Like I said in me OP, if I wanted a tablet, I already done so.
I'm totally not interested in those ;]
Netbooks... I already got a lappy.
I see netbooks as small screened lappy's so I'm also not really interested in those lol.

Well for the people that care.
I received it this midday c:
The fella had installed Windows 8 on it, took a 5 minute attempt at it and got annoyed by it not working.
Formatted it and am finishing tweaking/installing Win 7.

Next up on the list, Linux <3

You are quite honestly mad if you spunk away that much money on such feeble outdated shitty hardware.

Get a netbook for the same money, netbooks are what killed the UMPC concept anyway.

Would already done so if I wanted one.

    Outdated, yes, shitty, not entirely.
Win 7 runs pretty decent on it and Linux would be 10 times better.

Besides I like to fiddle around with it c:

I used to have a Sony UMPC... SSD model. It was pretty cool, but honestly today's smart phones blow anything like that out of the water. There isn't much of a point in having one if you have a smart phone or tablet.

Sorry for the late reply ;p
Got it a couple of months now.
    Still am enjoying it lots!

Driver support, well they won't be updated ofcourse but everything works flawlessly.
The WiFi driver is a bit odd since it shares the SDIO interface with the SD card, plugging in a SD card makes it unstable/disconnect from the network.

I got a couple of pics, will make a vid soon.
Any idea what you want to see running on it?

    pics

So far I got GTA2 and RCT1 installed and they both work flawlessly.
Meaning that oldschool games can be played with the stock configuration.
I can run Opera and Skype on it without the system lagging at all.

Youtube video's aren't the best but 360p/480p plays back without stuttering.

Yes I know the keyboard is missing a key but I plan on switching it out after I upgraded the RAM and HDD ;]

    N64 is a bit choppy.
I think that with speedhacks and an SSD/2GB RAM upgrade that the N64 emulation would be better.
Perhaps on Linux it'd be even better.

SNES NES GBA and all the standart emu's work perfectly.
