UMD to PSN program revealed

First, it should allow every game and it should be free. (at least for PSP Go)

I'm assuming that the same UMD can be redeemed multiple times, if so the making it free will mean people can simply share umds to activate a free download for everyone in question and that is not gonna be happening

How does sony know, if a copy has been used before to redeem a discounted digital copy? Does each copy of a psp game have an unique code programmed into the disc?...If so it would seem sony had this planned out years ago in the event UMDs failed.
its pretty commonplace to attach a unique serial number to a piece of media

i doubt its programmed into the game, if so it should be easy for sony to trace whose code aren't unique i.e. pirates! i don't own a UMD psp (have a psp go) but is there a code printed onto the UMD? if so then the programme may request those to do its business

Nope, it's apparently one redemption per UMD

There is no unique number on the UMD, there are codes printed on the ring in the centre of the disc, but a quick google search of the code from one of my games found that every (PAL) copy of that game has the same code. Unless there is a serial code stored on the disc, I don't see how this could work.

Thank You, that's the point i was trying to make.

What a ridiculous idea. Sony just wants to squeeze out more money from customers, no surprise there. Incidentally, I'm really not into the whole "doing away with tangible game copies" trend that they're going for. That means you will no longer be able to borrow games from a friend to try them out, or buying/selling used games, but instead have to pay full price for what will eventually be outdated games, or games that are just crappy from the start. I'll most likely just stick with the 3DS and my old PSP unless they come out with some damn good games(which they probably will... curse the temptation of that possibility, along with 3G and what will probably be great media capabilities >_
