Ubisoft uses the Dagger of Time to roll back the Prince of Persia franchise with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, a new game in the Sands of Time storyline to coincide with the release of Disney's feature film.

With the major motion picture purely focused on the Sands of Time storyline, Ubisoft puts it's cel-shaded franchise reboot on hold in order to deliver a new tale that will be more familiar to fans of the Jake Gyllenhaal version of the prince. The announcement backs up claims made by GameDaily back in June of last year regarding a movie tie-in game. It also answers a question raised by the Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands trademark that popped up in September.

We're not sure if The Forgotten Sands will be a direct movie tie-in featuring the likenesses of actors playing the parts in the film, or simply a side-story in the Sands of Time universe. All we know so far is that the game will feature "fan-favorite elements from the original series," along with some new innovations.

Speaking during Ubisoft's second half 2009 financial results, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot says the game will target both the hardcore and the more casual gamer.

"The goal is to reach both audiences, the core and casual gamers. It will be a game that will have lots of combat, with the possibility for gamers that are not as good - a level for beginners. In that sense we are trying to cover both groups."

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is due out in May for consoles and handhelds.

I used to love prince of persia but the moment it went cell shaded in my opinion it as ruined. I hope this will be as great as the first ones and not just be another movie game.

Are you serious??? That game was one of the best, albeit too easy. Now this is the one that is gonna suck nuts. Movie + game= FAIL......with the exception of Wolverine

I used to love Prince of Persia, but the moment it went 3D, in my opinion, it was ruined.

Except for the Cel-shaded one, that was kickass.

Street Fighter: The Movie: Video Game anyone?

Just re-release the first game and pretty it up a bit, that way you wont piss people off when it turns out "bleh".

Can't say I'm expecting much for a game that is announced and released within six months. Now if it turned out to have actually had a long development time like Ubi's good games then I'll be looking forward to it, other than that I'll treat it as a typical movie tie in.

I really didn't mind the cel-shadiness of the last game. That game's art direction was pretty cool.

Anyway, what the heck? I thought they wrapped up the Sands trilogy. This game had better be orgasmic, or else.

forgotten sands? does it mean tht the storyline will continue with the rebirth of another villian
movie looks like it could be good and i loved the Prince of Persia 2008 (cell shaded) best due to the acrobatics
i wish the handhelds mentioned should include DS and hopefully more combat even for it
the PC/PS3 etc version should have more combats as they have promised since the acrobatics were wonderful
the older versions had a huge variation of combat but i hope they leave out any warrior within concepts and concentrate on two thrones and PoP 08

3ds still seems to be an emulation powerhouse with little to counteract it (what are you going to use? A phone... hah). To that end second hand prices are likely to remain for a while

That said 3ds has no games so one can hope

The 3D effect was nice to begin with, but even Nintendo stopped putting it into games.
