After 20 months of delay Turkey's parliament has passed legislation to allow Sweden to join NATO, a defensive group which requires unanimous consent to accept new members.

Turkey was able to garner multiple concessions including purchase agreements for F16 fighter jets, new anti terrorism laws in Sweden, and eased arm imports from Canada and European nations.

Hungary still has yet to ratify an agreement on Swedish membership, but Orban has personally invited Swedish government to come to the table and negotiate. Hungarian parliament is out of session until mid February.

So what are your thoughts? Will Sweden joining
NATO change the geopolitical reality in any way?

Putin was an idiot for expecting any differently, invading their neighbor was always going to highlight the need for more security guarantees in the region. Russia historically just cannot stop shooting itself in the foot.

In some ways it's a purely strategic victory since Sweden is already a member of the EU and there is a common EU defense clause - and the EU common defense structure has the ability to use NATO command structure in times of war

So if Sweden were attacked outside of NATO it would likely trigger a very similar response

On the other hand tho, if a non EU/but NATO member country were attacked by Russia (such as Turkey) Sweden would now be obliged to help

Of course Sweden's ability to help in any armed conflict are quite small compared to other regional players
