Isn't this similar to the 360 drive where they block the backups at the hardware level?
Couldn't a custom firmware be made for the Wii dvd drive?
Do you think it'd be possible for someone to flash the drive directly from the Wii since you have root access to the hardware, unlike the 360 where you need a PC to access it?

I don't think you have access to the drive's firmware. Just think about it and why nintendo doesn't update the old drives with this.

And a hardware flasher is unlikely to be done, because usb loading is just too easy and superior anyways.

Sorry, i'm gathing info to "fix" this, just to know more. I doubt there will ever be a way to boot DVD-Rs on these Wiis, there's really nobody working on this and i don't know a good reason why anybody should work on it. Only argument would be gamecube backups, but for this there will be emu_kidid's new loader with sd and usb gecko support.

You must have a cIOS installed for this to work correctly.
