Gaming Tri Force Heroes import question

So I have a EU 3DS, and I'm considering ordering a US copy of the game so I can play with friends, but I'm not sure if the game would connect to the US or EU servers. Can anyone clarify?

You can't load the US copy out of region...cartridges are locked.

It probably doesnt matter since region free roms still connect, lol.
