Cool, I applaud him. For one, test carts have done little to nothing to help hacking a console, and historically, they have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Second, if he didn't return it, there is a good chance someone or a number of someones could have lost their job. It's kind of nice to see someone not be a selfish twat for once.

God damn. That's a lot of stuff.
Well, most likely the testing cartridge would not be very useful. Just look at the Wii Pink Fish Disc. It doesn't do anything of use for hacking.
But it would've been a neat item to hold on to, and maybe sell. Would definitely be worth something. Maybe not as much as all the stuff he got instead. Not knowing that I would be compensated for it, I would have kept the cartridge, or at the very least find out what it is used for and what it can do. If it was useless I would probably give it back.

Ahh, see, that was the beauty of the DS design... flaw. A faulty header pointer allowed to load from, well, wherever you set the pointer to... and since DS Mode could use the SLOT-2 then why the hell not use it?

Unfortunately it's not that simple with the 3DS, but we're getting there slowly. I advise patience.

It's not like we can whip lib3DS out of our asses y'know, it takes time to map the system and create a function set, not everyone is an ARM Assembly God. Not that I'm preaching or anything but you're expecting way too much way too early - proper homebrew will pop up once the coders have tools to work with - right now hackers and coders alike are in the process of making those tools.

Exactly....like almost no one is an Assembly language God anymore....it is the lost art since all these high level laguages have come about and everything has libraries and dev kits. Back in the day everything was done in assembly (Its how Nintendo could put a game like Zelda OOT on a 32mb cartridge) and now about the only people who really learn assembly are firmware programers that have to write the operating code that interfaces the various aspects of the system hardware....sad I mean do they even teach this shit anywhere anymore....way back in the day I could do some assembly on 8bit systems like the 6502/6510 that the Apple2/Atari800/C64 used so I know the concepts but each processor family is almlost like learnning an entire new language and I am sure it is more complex now with processors having so many more registers and such.

Maybe the cart was more like the usb repair stick that was used to help hack the ps3, but we shall not know of contents of said cart or even if the op really had it.

The cart probably would have done nothing. At most it could have reinstalled/reflashed the firmware, but that's about it.

Those items he got sure were nice.
3DS should remain unhacked. I know Gateway seem to be making breakthroughs... But the region lock has aided us in it's own way.
Companies acknowledge the need to localize games in other countries now. Once this happens again... Things might start slipping.
And we don't want that.

Being region free didn't seem to affect the NDS, GBA or GBC sales-wise. Why would the 3DS be any different without region locking, it's not a surefire way to get games from other regions nor will it force localization.

Love it......I would really like to know what Gateway's sales numbers are so far....I mean I really wonder if they are even 10K units yet and am sure they aren't 100K.....this is against a user base of 30mil+ users. It is a niche product to be sure and I don't think we will ever see flash carts on 3DS reach the level of populatrity they did on GBA or DS (and even that was likely less than 1 mil against a base of 150mil). Good games with proper exposure and distribution are going to sell well, I mean MH4 did over 3mil in a week in one territory and Pokemon did 4mil in 3 days with a world wide release....still this video is very funny and I am sure a few execs and Nintendo wish they could do that to Gateaway

Still, I would have liked to have known for sure that at least one of these test carts would be out in the wild by the time 3DS emulation and datamining becomes possible. Some very interesting things have been found in precedent carts of this nature!

yes isnt this how the ps3 got hacked to allow downgrades? a user service dongle got leaked

but the cart could also have been useless too ,too bad he didnt have another 3ds on 4.5, a gateway and their new unreleased fw with cart backup ,maybe he could have made a backup image
and returned the cart and still got the goodie bag

I completely agree, no point getting some poor bugger in trouble for it. That and the cartridge doesn't actually belong to him at all. Just because it was in his 3ds doesn't automatically make it his property. To keep said cartridge would be nothing more then theft.

@OnTopic Not sure what to think about this. Little would have likely came out of this. Considering the guy was so quick to give it back, he probably would not have utilized the card/made use of it. We would probably never hear about it.
3DS homebrew is nearly possible as it is.
