Wow, I give this guy props, and I'm sure nintendo loved the fact that he was so willing to give back what would've ruined the 3ds completely. they know that they almost cost the company millions by leaving that cartridge in. I'd rather have been this guy who received highly honored gifts from nintendo directly, plus a few games.

I didn`t think of this. The question is why would they give you a lot of games and stuffs which costs about a 3ds just to get the cart back?

They most likely did that for their image. If they give out rewards like that to people who return things like testing cards, they are most likely hoping it will encourage more people do it instead of holding onto them.
The cards are useless to the general public and only used for testing purposes only as well are Nintendo property.

When I lose an umbrella, I generally want it back because it's my umbrella and I'm thankful when someone returns it, but it doesn't mean that you can open my front door with said umbrella, it just means that I like my stuff.

No, it is not. I am going to be blunt with everyone.

Do people really think if this card could just insta-hack your system, that they would be this careless with it? Seriously if this card was that damaging they would have clear tabs on who's using it, what 3DS it's in, was it returned, who returned it, ect ect. They would never be this careless if the card was that damaging to the system. In reality if this really did happen, then their reward is purely based on company image alone, The products they gave out would barely dent the profits of Nintendo, but are nice reward to encourage people to return these kinda things instead of allowing them to be leaked, like the DS testing tools were. I bet everyone forgot about those tools that were leaked. You know what they did? Nothing special, all they did was test the features of the DS and make sure everything was working and this card would obviously do the same thing.
If anyone honestly believes testing cards could be used for hacking, they lack a clear understanding of what these cards actually can and can't do.

EDIT: Honestly I am skeptical of this story myself since I doubt Nintendo would even be that careless to begin with. Even though the cards aren't damaging, Nintendo really likes to keep them under lock and key, and always destroy them so they don't end up on the market. Making them highly sought after, and could be sold for a shit ton of money.
At best all they would be good for is collecting dust on someone's shelf, but that would be one really expensive dust trap.

For the general public, testing cards and other testing tools are useless.
Unreleased games are more appealing to the general public, but even that's not valued as much.

Personally, I'd love to have a 3DS testing cartridge.
Even if it's a dump of it.
I like these kind of things.

Maybe they don't have the boxes? Maybe those games were left in consoles sent in by customers for repair, and seeing how the consoles needed the testing cartridge putting in them, maybe the engineer(s) forgot to replace the previous game and the recipient forgot about it. The 3DS has been out a long time, 3 out of 4 of those games are quite old now, it's not really that hard to believe that a Nintendo repair centre could have 4 3DS games without boxes, is it?

I used to work in a PC repair centre, and the amount of crap that was never collected really built up over time, including retail PC games without boxes. I never gave any away to customers, though

I wouldn't say a testing ROM is *completely* useless. If it tests features of the system, then by disassembling it and studying it, hackers can figure out which addresses and registers are assigned to which part of the hardware, and thus have hints in the right direction for creating an I/O library, which is the foundation of all (useful) programs.

But beyond that, yeah. Nothing fancy.

Personally, I don't find the games in a CD cover that unusual. Many people don't realize Nintendo now sells 'refurbished' DSi's, DSi'XL, & 3DS. You can buy them discounted right form their store site.

Keeping in mind that the manufacturing plant is probably in a whole other location from their(( admin offices: I suspect they also provide the same with games. I would not find it unusual to have a dozen or so of some game cartridges laying around the office for demo purposes, or to give as gifts ( in prepared 'premium' packages for contest give aways' after the tour to some visiting dignitaries or to send to reviewers or some other similar nonsense... Remember all those DS's they sent to the Louvre ? Since these 'deals' PR promo's are probably created in the admins offices, and not the factory floor, that is probably where they're sent from also...

Any company that really believes in their product will also use it when the time is available and right. laying around the office (for staff demo to writers or some other such nonsense.etc... If you believe their propaganda, Reggies' been playing Animal Crossing for months now as well as the other spot pass-ed Miis.

What exactly would a test card be doing in a replacement 3DS? Was it a test card for testing games that are in development or was it a test card that tests if the system works?
