It's the setup I'm currently using, specifically I'm using this one: SanDisk Ultra Android microSDXC 128GB bis zu 80 MB/Sek Class 10 Speicherkarte + SD-Adapter FFP https://www.amazon.de/dp/B013UDL5HU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_hubLxbVMTRA7C
(Yes, German amazon because I'm from europe and it was the cheapest there)
Can confirm it'll work with that one at least, you're welcome ^^

I think most of us use such a set-up, including me.

Make sure it is Class 10 mimimum, and format with 64k clusters using fat32format.

All SD Cards (including mini and micro SD Cards with adapters) are theoretically compatible with the Wii U.
Unfortunately, some don't practically work.

If you want the best possible compatibility, ensure that it is a class 10 card.
Once you receive it, download this tool. Use it to format your entire SD Card to FAT32, and if you have the option, chose 64k clusters.

I think the jumping around the whole time between formatting tools is just because most tools don't update the mbr properply and make a mess of it with the new relaxed gpt standards

The different tools is because Windows won't format larger SD cards as FAT32 - only FATFS.
