lol sinkhead! I can't belive people trying to argue that torrents are better! Anyway I have a question maybe you could help me with.

I use Grabit and my ISP's usenet service which is actually pretty good. However, on a.b.games.xbox360 a lot of games will come up as red/incomplete but usually the games are from one particular uploader named thedark1. and they never included par2's. However, on binsearch.info or even on the grabit search they will come up black and say 401/401 parts complete or whatever the parts number might be.

Is my problem with Grabit? Is the problem that he doesn't include par2s?

Sorry mate but must be Grabit. I just searched the xbox360 for posts by thedark1 and see about 2 dozen releases returned and all complete AND with pars. Never heard of Grabit. If you want the best usenet provider use Giganews - over 200 days of retention and files are always complete.

Edit: I Just think about this:
Another big good thing about usenet is that you don't need to upload like bittorrent. So your internet speed will be faster since you don't upload and seeding stuff is illegal so....
thats a really stoopid way to look at usenet
if it wasnt for uploaders usenet would be nothing so it's only fair to give a little back
i quite often post stuff to usenet and help out in a few irc request chans for usenet groups where people join and request specific stuff
i think it's always nice to give back as it just helps everybody

grabit is not a usenet provider but a usenet download client
the reason your getting a lot of incompletes is because your isp's usenet server dosent propergate very well with the server that the guy is posted to
that is one of the problems of using a "in house" isp usenet server

as for people saying about torrents at slow speeds ur not using the right sites lol
i have always been dead against torrents because the thought of broadcasting your ip to any muppet who connects to you is scary shit but i am a member of a very nice strictly private torrent site (and have a shit hot ratio too) and whenever i download from there my connection sits quite happily at 2.1MB/sec for the whole download

I'd just like to point out to people again that everyone has their own way of doing Usenet, that's why there are so many newsreaders and servers and searchers and stuff...

yeh usenet is very adaptable to how you want to use it
i use a combo of newsleecher/newzbin/headers and it suits me fine
have used a few different clients over the yrs but newsleecher is by far the best one in my opinion

Srry but i believe you didn't read my topic right. i said that grabit is a usenet client and i always have complete downloads never incomplete. My torrent speeds are also always high since i DO have the right sites like BC-games and so yes i do also use torrents sometimes when it's nowhere on the newsgroups. I never upload to the newsgroups since my max up-speed is about 40 KB/s so that would take days. And with slow internet because of uploading i ment slow internet in the browser so you are waiting like 2 minutes till you see a site since my speeds are not fast at all. Because I live in a small village, I want fiberglass!!

Ah ok, nvm then

Great tutorial Sinkhead.
I've been hearing [M] and Little talk about how much they love usenet on irc, so I've been considering giving it a try. And since I'm upgrading my internet package next week (512K to 1.5M, the most they offer), it would be a good time to try it.

Can anyone recommend a usenet client for linux?
My laptop runs windows, but since I take it to work every day, I prefer to leave the downloading to my kubuntu box.

klibido is the best kde usenet client, pan is the best gtk client.

I hope you nubs that are arguing about torrents being better than Usenet aren't referring to public tracker sites. Public trackers can't hold a candle to Usenet.

Private tracker sites are the only torrent sources that can considered to rival Usenet.

I like the tutorial, though I don't really need it;). It'd be great if you did some formatting though. Big wall of text is big. Underline/bold where necessary, healthy for the eyes. Now for my input.

I use, I love it, and I use torrents too. I don't pay for usenet access as my isp provides free access with the only restriction being a 10 day retention. I can live with that since download speeds are always maxed out for me and you can always find scene releases there first.
I personally don't like grab-it all that much because of past experiences and so I use Newsleecher too. I find it more comprehensive in features, etc. As for nzb indexing sites, I use binsearch and newzleech.

So as you see, I don't pay for either

. And I find torrents an oh-k way for filesharing compared to usenet, unless you belong to a decent private tracker you like.

hellaNZB is the best usenet downloader i've used. it runs in the background, you just drop a .nzb file in the queue directory, and it will automatically:
1. download, automatically skipping the PARs
2. retrieve any PARs if needed
3. check & repair
4. unrar
5. delete the rar files

I use Powerusenet

$9.99 a month
*Unlimited Transfer
*105 days retention
*6 connections

$12.99 a month
*Unlimited Transfer
*105 days retention
*12 connections
*256bits SSL encryption

I maximize my connection almost 24/7 hence the lag

BTW, if anyone's up to try it, use this link and help your lagman

lol sinkhead! I can't belive people trying to argue that torrents are better!

Torrents are free which automatically makes them a better option for myself. I've got membership at several private trackers and I max out my downloads very easily.

You're entitled to your opinion of course but if I can get the same thing for free that you're paying for...why would I get usenet? any other advantages?

It seems like a few usenet users act like they're the elite

I'm probably missing something so if you guys could let me know what is so much better about usenet I would be very appreciative. Just keep in mind I get max speed from private trackers and I don't have to pay for anything. Cheers

You don't broadcast your ip for everyone to see when downloading from usenet. That be one reason. Also Usenet is always there ,it won't suddenly get shut down like torrent sites can , not that it matters as one site goes down , another comes up , but you wanted some reasons
