I wrote a tutorial about how to use Usenet and I'll be here to answer your questions.
Usenet is an amazing resource for pretty much anything including films, music, games and more. Because you're downloading from a server and not other people's computers (like torrents and LimeWire etc) you can get really fast speeds, I get between 300KB/s peak and 700KB/s off-peak. I would get faster but my crappy BT phone line is being maxed out. I personally love it, I would never go back to torrents or P2P now, and I'd like some other people to learn how to use it. It sounds complicated, but it's really not, give it a go! And yes, it isn't free, but it's not exactly expensive either. 50GB is only $15 and that lasts for ever until you use up your quota (on Usenet-News, the provider I use)

Edit: Apparently there is a good free newsreader called GrabIt. I have never heard of this before, but it seems like a lot of people use it!

Any questions? Just ask! I'm not the only person here who uses Usenet so I'm sure other people will help as well [IMG]

Yes because it is blazingly fast and you don't have to worry about seeders or anything.

That was a really good tutorial but I think I'll stick with torrents. Just my opinion and preference.

Would use it though if I had any money to spare.

Just wondering, how bad are isp usenet services?

It really depends on your ISP. They tend to be really fast (because the traffic isn't leaving their network) but they often have very low retention which means they only have really new messages because the new ones push the old ones out really quickly. I'm with BT and it isn't bad, but my paid account is much much better.

I might see if I can get a usenet provider.
Just wondering, do they have like a trial period, just in case in want to cancel the contract?

GigaNews has a free 3 day 10GB trial, but I think you still have to provide billing details and stuff for it and then cancel it before those 3 days are over or you will be billed. I haven't used it, so I don't know much about it.

    Excellent tutorial sinkhead

Usenet is so much better than anything else. With torrents you can get really slow connections and with rapidshare links can get deleted within hours, but usenet is fast, reliable and gets everything first.

I advise everyone who downloads via torrents to consider switching. Hitnews still has their 7-day free trial, so sign-up and test sinkhead's guide [IMG]

(edit) I've been with hitnews for 3 months now. Unlimited downloads for under £5 per month.

I'll probably stick with torrents then, much less hassle for me.

    ...thinks about it...

Ditto, and most of the time Bit Torrents are fast for me. It is just the case of looking for less leachers.

Do you have to pay for a Usenet account, or are there free, good ones (so no ISP)?

Why pay for a account on Usenet to get stuff when you can find the stuff on Bit Torrent for free?
