Following the death of their Grandfather, two young children are presented with his legacy, a toy shop. The only catch to being set for life with a house, workshop, store front and career is that they must earn 50 thousand dollars in profit within 3 years or lose everything.

Tutorials begin the basic game mechanic explanations enhanced by Manga influenced 2D graphics. The children are soon instructed how to setup and manage the toy shop through simplified controls and a drag/drop interface. Time progresses swiftly in-game using a 4 month seasonal calendar which represents the passing of a year. Days move with increased speed beginning at 9am and ending at 7pm. During this time the children are free to venture out into the surrounding 3D rendered cityscape, converse, build toys, or manage prices and inventory.

The shop itself takes seconds to setup and can be maintained though the well laid out interface. All important information has been carefully presented to make game play fun and second nature. Submenus never litter the bottom screen at any time, making the implementation of day to day decision making quick and easy. The menu area contains navigational short cuts but lacks a way to switch between the individual toy displays and the build mode. Instead these have been implemented into the D-Pad and button controls. Missing stylus options come at a bit of a surprise as area on the interface is available for an additional build mode short cut, and the “showcase” title bar could have easily doubled as a clickable way to switch between display cases.

The work shop continues the clean interface making it easy to browse available toy designs and add items into the manufacturing queue. Important information is again carefully laid out and readily available. Small buttons finish off the bottom of the screen allowing for fast productive categorical blue print searches. However, when play modes are switched the button index is lost, a problem the shop mode does not suffer from. If time is a factor during the automatic toy manufacturing phase, carefully coordinated D-pad movements can speed up the process. Failed building attempts will cost money yet continue to add onto the total build number. The higher the number, the easier and cheaper a toy becomes to produce. Unfortunately, as toy production becomes affordable, the cost display found on the shop mode interface is never updated.

The interaction mode allows the children to seek fun conversations and aid, through new toy designs in 4 locations around town. At anytime the user has the option to return to the shop, which is important, as the shop is not open if the children are not present. Later the opportunity to move to a larger location presents itself, as does the ability to take on help. Upon returning to the shop the button to open the store for business must be pushed, leaving the user wondering why the store simply does not open automatically.

The game play itself is very repetitive accompanied by a small handful of sound effects and musical scores. Building the same baseline toys with the goal of reaching the more profitable designs quickly becomes lackadaisical. Shelf and display stocking can become frustrating as items can not be dragged/dropped over already present ones. The start of each day requires numerous button pushes or stylus clicks to move past the various intro screens, a task you will quickly become annoyed with. The game offers only 3 save slots each associated with a new game.

Besides a few minor interface polishing complaints which at times does make the game appear rushed through publication, the game play remains fun in small doses. Some of the later toy designs are a treat to unlock but little variation on game play mechanics can become dull all too quickly. Additional features such as custom toy designs or a WIFI trading feature might have added to the overall enjoyment.

This game is great for younger children and those not familiar with simulation games. The clean interface and fast pick up and play game mechanics accompanied with the 20 dollar price tag make for a bit of fun while on the go.

The box art looks quite nice, maybe a bit childish but still nice. The thing that interested me most about this box art was the ‘Steven Spielberg’ bit… Having not heard of this game beforehand I thought I’d give it a go anyway.
You can tell that this is a well made and well thought out game. It has different modes and game types to keep you entertained for a long time. The create mode should keep you happy for days.
Game Types:
Explore Mode:
v Gem Blox – The aim is to throw a ball and hit down all of the gem blocks. Try to get them all over in as few throws as possible.
v Point Blox – The aim is to throw balls in order to hit down as many point blocks as possible. Similar to the last game but each block is worth so many points.
v Bomb Blox – The aim is to use bombs or bomb blocks to hit down point blocks.
v Vanish Blox – Upon hitting a vanish block it disappears allowing certain blocks to fall, similar to the others but different.
v Chemical Blox – If two Chemical Blocks collide it creates a chemical reaction allowing other blocks to fall.
v Grab Tool – Grab out the required blocks without knocking over penalty blocks. (A little like Jenga)
Sure these all sound similar, they are… but it is still very entertaining.
Adventure Mode:
Again, all very similar, but this mode has more to do with helping sheep and stuff.
There are also 2 unlockable modes, but I haven’t gotten that far yet. I might do a follow-up for next weeks issue.
Create Mode: Allows you to create your own structure using different blocks and you can choose your own Scenario, such as grab all the gem blocks in 10 seconds or something.

Overall I think this is a great game with hours worth of entertainment.

<div align="center"><a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=85780" target="_blank"><img src="http://jph.gbatemp.net/angunaicon.png" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a> <b>Anguna</b> Review by <a href='http://gbatemp.net/member.php?name=Another World' target=_blank title='View profile for member Another World'}>Another World</a></div>
Monsters have struck again, leaving our hero tattered and abandoned in an ominous forbidden tomb. You must rise with sword in hand and strike swiftly, for your mission has only begun. The Dragon, leader of all monsters, must fall this day.

Nathan Tolbert has spent 3 years of his free time working progressively to hone his GameBoy Advance developmental skills through the product that is Anguna: Warriors of Virtue. He describes the homebrew game as being “a short but exciting action-adventure game, reminiscent of the original Legend of Zelda.” Personally I can see the influence of such games as Lagoon (SNES), Zelda a Link to the Past (SNES), and Radia Senki - Reimei Hen (NES).

The survival of room to room monster abolishing dungeon searches makes up the core of the game play. Enemy movement patterns are random but attack on fixed access points. Bats always move on diagonals, and Hobgoblin sentries move with right angled turns for example. What sounds predictable actually is quite challenging as fast pattern changes keep you on your toes. Each monster is made up of brightly colored, handsomely rendered sprites by Chris Hildenbrand. The backgrounds, monsters and other aspects that Hildenbrand has brought to the game look professional and definitely enhance the mood.

During exploration a handful of fun to wield items aid the hero through the large over-world and the 5 challenging dungeons. Item placement and usage has been thought out, forcing you to gain items before advancing past certain spots. This causes you to explore and fight rather than just hack and slash your way through various obstacles. The items themselves have obviously been borrowed from the Zelda series. A bow and arrow, a lantern, red health potions, boots of flight, a power ring, and dynamite (bombs) will all seem very familiar. The addition of the bear trap will have you second guessing enemy movements as proper trap placement for monster devastation should put a smile on any adventure's face. The items all work well and have no obvious bugs or problematic implantation into standard game play.

The game itself keeps track of your movements with an accessible overview style map. The pause menu also includes an inventory screen and a defeated monster database. The database is enhanced by creatively drawn monster renditions from Hildenbrand. A changing musical score accompanies each major area of the game, although always the same it somehow never gets old. Controls are tight and responsive, both diagonal movements and quick sword slashes work with no problems. Some minor glitches such as rare misplaced sprites and collision detection between the main character and the surrounding environment do exist. Thankfully Tolbert is actively participating in debugging discussions and updates of his product.

With all the good fun that comes out of playing this game, it does at times feel as though it is missing some vital aspects to really pull it together. A few towns, some people to talk to, a handful of side quests, and perhaps weapon and armor upgrades would have really put this game on the next level. Tolbert has stated that he has no plans to add any additional material to the game and that after the long development cycle he is looking forward to moving onto other projects. Perhaps wishful thinking simply comes from the fact that this game is such a treat to play and by the end it will have you looking for more.

I'm sure PharaohsVizier is grateful!
<!--QuoteBegin-Originality+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Originality)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->In answer to a very old question, the PSP Slim can have brighter settings than the phat. Aside from having only one plastic layer on the screen, it has a better backlight system. I would not recommend playing it in a dark room - makes your eyes feel like crap afterwards. Also, it's actually a better thing for the slim to have only 1 layer - makes screen protectors easier to apply, and more useful (if the second layer on the phat gets scratched up, there's little you can do).

In answer to the question about memory cards, 8GB memory cards are impossible to turn into magic memory sticks to downgrade with. They always say use 4GB or less, although there are still some 4GB ones that can't be used (like my Sandisk Ultra II - authentic). However when it comes to games, I would recommend holding most games on an 8GB because of its capacity, your favourite games on 4GB, and having a 1 or 2GB memory card spare to use as a magic memory card.

PSP has bigger and more powerful games, whilst DS has tiny games with decent quality. Most importantly, DS has innovation, incorporating its touchscreen in most games you play. PSP also wins in emulation hands down, except for GBA. I've always found it useful to play GBA on the top screen and have a small manager (for cheats/save states/txt reading) on the touch screen - something the PSP can never offer. Only problem is that I've not been able to find the site since the first time I downloaded it - I can't give it to my brother's DS.

Games to recommend? Breath of Fire IV and Team Buddies (PSX), and Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Flatout: Head On (PSP). Whatever you choose to play, enjoy!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Nice work!
Boom Blox is indeed an awesome game, would've given it 9/10 as well.
btw, the 2 unlockables is adventure challenge and explore challenge, which is just the same as adventure/explore but alot harder.

Hmm, Metal Slug 1 VC? that's kinda.. worthless, as you could just go buy the Metal Slug anthology for 4-5 times the money, and get all ( well almost) metal slugs, which all metal slug fans have already done, and thus wont download this VC game..

I picked this week's topic of the week myself (and blog of the week too).
Great issue JPH! Thanks to everyone who helped!

Seems kind of distasteful to be splaying Weapon's incredibly personal blog entry on a front page article.

I'm not sure how it works, but I don't think it's distasteful, it seems that someone who posts a blog online wants people to read it. I could be wrong though, but either way I don't think JPH meant any harm. It was an interesting read, good luck Weaponxxx. I feel the same way right now, I'm stuck at a dead end job, and I feel like I'm missing the best years of my kid's life having to work full time and spend two hours in traffic a day. It really is a struggle, it helps reading other people's experiences though and knowing your not alone.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. But I'd give it topic of the week.
Great job JPH.
QUOTE(ShadowXP @ May 11 2008, 02:41 PM) JPH, why did you nominate your own thread for Topic of the Week?
QUOTE(CockroachMan @ May 11 2008, 02:53 PM)
lol
The topic deserves it.. I'm just kidding..
