I'm so thrilled. This is my ideal model PS2 and I now own one. It's MechaPwn compatible and has an HDD bay and all the benefits of being a fat PS2. I do think it's odd they got rid of the filter on the front ventilation on this model, but other than that it's perfect for me anyway.

FreeHDBoot + MechaPwn = Fully unlocked PS2 baybee. Let's go!

I never even paid attention to which model I had until mechapwn came out. Checked and sure enough I have 50001. Totally agree, it's the best model to have now. Love it.

This is true, I got mine set up with a 3D printed 2.5in adapter and a 500GB Samsung EVO SSD with FreeHDBoot and even installed HDDOSD because why not. Now why use an SSD? Spin up times. For some reason the PS2 spins the drive up and down depending on what you are doing and it wait for this to be done before showing the OSD on boot with FreeHDBoot, browsing HDD in wLaunchElf, and running OPL. This speeds that up considerably over an old IDE HDD.

I'm using an IDE drive and an original adapter. I've been seeing these purple boards that have SATA connectors to replace the IDE connectors on the original adapter, I'm kind of interested in that solution for the future if it doesn't break network connectivity. Stuff like the GameStar adapters without network support just seem like they'd make installing games to the drive a chore.

Edit: Why not enable Hacked OSDSYS and make a shortcut to OPL on your OSD?

I do have OPL in my list as FreeHDBoot works with hacked HDDOSD as long as you install FreeHDBoot after HDDOSD.

also, I am using one of these purple adapters. Works great and I retain full network adapter support vs aftermarket full HDD adapter stuff like GameStar.

Good to know. I'll probably pick one up sometime then.

There's one out there that keeps the Ethernet functionality intact, I have one.
