The Original DOOM trilogy has quietly launched on Switch/PS4/XB1

Launching with little fanfare are the first three DOOM games, in order to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary. Bethesda has brought DOOM, DOOM II, and DOOM 3 to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch. They're all currently available to buy digitally, with the first two games costing $4.99, while 3 is priced at $9.99. The first two games are also on both iOS and Android, if you enjoy your classic games on the go.

Celebrate Doom’s 25th anniversary with the re-release of the original Doom (1993). First released in 1993, Doom introduced millions of gamers to the fast-paced, white-knuckle, demon-slaying action the franchise is known for.

Experience the classic demon-blasting fun that popularized the genre home or on-the-go.

Doom (1993) includes:

  • The expansion, Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed, with nine additional action-packed levels
  • Local four-player deathmatch
  • Local four-player co-op
Doom II
Celebrate Doom‘s 25th anniversary with the re-release of Doom II. This beloved sequel to the groundbreaking Doom (1993) gave players the brutal Super Shotgun to bear against deadlier demons, and the infamous boss, the Icon of Sin.

Battle the demon hordes at home or on-the-go on Nintendo Switch.

The re-release of Doom II includes:

  • The Master Levels, 20 additional levels made by the community and supervised by the developers
  • Local four-player multiplayer
  • Local four-player co-op
To save Earth, you must descend into the depths of hell, survive demon hordes, and take part in the fiercest battle ever.

Doom 3
Celebrate Doom‘s 25th anniversary with the release of Doom 3, available for the first time on Nintendo consoles.

In this critically acclaimed action-horror re-telling of the original Doom, players must battle their way through a demon-infested facility before entering the abyss to battle Hell’s mightiest warrior—and put an end to the invasion.

Doom 3 includes the Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Missions expansion packs.

I can't believe they didn't include local wireless/lan multiplayer. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the original doom on DOS have lan play 25 years ago?

This whole required log-in thing sucks. My Switch is mainly a handheld console and not always connected to the internet.
Despite my initial excitement I'll hold off from buying the games for now...

Yes I agree the problem I can see here, if Bethesda has done this with all 3 doom releases requiring a Nintendo ID connection to run the game then there’s no stopping other developers doing exactly the same I think this way of playing games will follow suit with other up and coming titles especially if it’s been a success. In this case, if it’s an ongoing method then you will need an active online Nintendo account connected to that console to check your account details to run the games and if you have a banned Nintendo Switch it won’t be able to connect to the Nintendo servers to play it.

It also appears Bethesda expects people who had the backwards compatible version to pay for it again. Yeah, I know they admitted this was a "bug" and they're fixing but...this is 2019 Bethesda we're talking about, and the timing is too considentical to not have an insidious motive.

Also, a game from 1993 apparently needs a fucking online authentication.

I cannot see how some users are reporting you don’t need to log in to play doom 3? you clearly do! it asks for an account set up with log in soon as it says “press any button” you cannot get round this, it then checks with your active Nintendo online account for your ID through an active internet connection and there is no other way of playing it also doom 3 checks your Nintendo account details , your user details every time you boot the game back up from the menu. I bought the game myself I have seen it and I had to set up an account myself to play it. Unless the uk version of eshop is different but I doubt it?

Try putting yourself in airplane mode? Using incognito on CFW I got the typical bad cert error, was able to click past it and play without any prompt for sign in.

Various reports coming in that an Internet connection is required to play Doom 1 and 2 (maybe 3 as well) and on top of that an account on Bethesda.net - verify this before buying.

Edit: Others are now reporting that the Internet connection requirement and Bethesda.net login is a one time thing only. Keep checking the usual places for updates on this.

Such is one of the reasons why I've boycotted Bethesda. The first two are MS-DOS games, and Doom 3 is a 6th-gen game, what possible reason could you have for slapping such overbearing DRM onto them!?

It's such a non demanding game that I would be blown away if there was any form of performance difference in any way at all.
wait, what, Bethesda, why is the music slower? you had one simple job. a port job that required practically no optimization. just get it working right and ship it, and you fucked it up. ya had to just go and make the music arbitrarily play slower. I'm probably still gonna buy just for the easy multiplayer but none the less. how did you fuck this up

I have read that you need a Bethesda account for the Nintendo Switch version of the game only? Thats what I have read on a few articles online. The articles do not say you need a Beteshda account for the other platforms. Can anyone confirim if this is the case?

I needed one on the android port as well. It's unfortunate and they're working to remove the requirement..

It is good to hear that they are removing the account requierments in some places. I remember that Final Fantasy 7 on pc requires you to sign into a Square Enix account but its not bad at all.

To think that the games don't even support multiplayer.
If the log-in requirement disappears I'll buy them, until then I'll stick to homebrew ports.
it does support multiplayer, splitscreen at least. online is not in there though
edit: also, the log in requirement is getting patched out too

Which is counter-intuitive. Considering this was the series that helped spawn online deathmatches...
I remember hearing that a lot of it was lan play which even from that standpoint the lack of local multiplayer seems like a bit of a weird thing too. I have no clue what Bethesda is doing with this port as they released it on the xbox one also and removed the xbox 360 port when they released it which did support online multiplayer, which yes, was available on the xbox one via being one of those backwards compatible titles. it makes no sense.

The controls are butchered. There's no was to have a real "classic" doom control experience, despite the games name, unless you're playing split screen using a single joycon. All the one player modes require dual joycons or pro controller and use the much more "modern" (and impossible for me to use) twin stick control scheme. I'm mighty pisses off, I am.
Didn't even realize single joycon was SP only. How janked is that? Come on, Bethesda. These games are a couple decades old. What's the hurdle here?

The hurdle is these are Unity remakes using the original game data WAD files and not the original engine at all. It's just slapped together so it can be multi-platform. They didn't spend time on silly things like taking advantage of a single console's diverse control schemes.
